منof الأشجانthe sorrows ماthat which يقذىirritates الجفوناthe eyelids
Your greeting, my dear friend, has dispelled from me
Your peace has departed from me, O my friend
the sorrows that chafe the eyelids.
With sorrows that scorch the eyelids
أكادI almost أرىsee بهاbecause of them صبحيmy morning ظلاماdarkness
وأسبابand the means الأمانيthe hopes ليfor me منوناdoom
Because of them, I almost see my morning as darkness,
I almost see my morning as darkness
and the means to fulfill my hopes as my doom.
And the causes of wishes have died for me
فكمso how many منof مؤنسa congenial companion فارقتI parted from رغماunwillingly
وكمand how many منof موحشan uncongenial person القىI encounter قريناa companion
How many a congenial companion I have left against my will,
So many a companion I was forced to leave
and how many an uncongenial soul I encounter as a companion.
And so many a lonely one I met as a mate
وكمand how many منof مأربa desire قدindeed ندslipped away عنيfrom me

And how many a desire has slipped away from me
And so many a goal that has become out of reach
and left me groaning for it.
And left me moaning for it, sighing

And among all people I find no one
And I cannot find among people a cure
to help me with my desire and my sorrows:
For my affliction and my sorrows as a helper

either one clenches both hands out of meanness,
For either a tyrant has clenched his fists
or one is unrestrained in worldly life and religion.
Or a libertine has abandoned religion and world
كأنas though الناسthe people قدindeed صارواhave become ذئاباwolves
تنوشsnatch at الغثthe lean نوشاsnatching والسميناand the fat
It is as though people have turned into wolves
It is as if people have become wolves
that snatch at the lean and the fat alike.
That gulp down the barren and the fertile

If you are led to think that one among them is worthy
If I fancied that they would provide support
of good, at close quarters he turns into a kiln.
The tribes proved otherwise

And if you seek an intimate friend in their courtyard,
And if I sought their friendship
you find him to be smoke or a furnace.
I found smoke or fire

It is as though estrangement were their relish,
It is as if estrangement to them is perpetual
and they have come to drink from a flowing spring of obscene filth.
And when the cheek became rough they provided solace

If you keep them at a distance, they erupt in madness,
If I distanced myself from them, they raged in madness
and if you draw close to them, they surge with wantonness.
And if I drew nearer, they raved in foolishness

Our age wages war on whoever is peaceable,
Time fights whoever remains peaceful
and betrays whoever remains trustworthy.
And mutilates whoever remains faithful

Such has long been its habit with us,
That has been its way with us since old
so do not marvel at an act that is its custom.
So do not be surprised at a deed that was fated

I see you have learned my plight and pity me;
I see you have realized my state, consoling me
but has it told you what set the tears flowing?
Do you realize what destiny has unfolded?

It is my loved ones' distance from me; and I
My loved ones have departed from me and I
yearn deeply for reunion with them.
Yearn for their reunion, pining

كآبةgrief والدa father فقدlost البنيناthe sons
I find myself, after parting from them,
I see myself, after their separation
with the grief of a father who has lost his sons.
Gloomy like a father who lost his sons

So I have no liveliness in my day

Nor do I find tranquility in my night

Oh, the length of my separation and burning
over separation from all my loved ones!
For the absence of all my loved ones

And you hold the dearest place among them in my regard,
And you are the dearest to me in status
so remain holding fast to God, protected.
So stay, I implore you, protected and safe
