ياO أهلpeople of الخيرgoodness هلاّwhy not رعتمyou frightened منwhoever راعهfrightened him
My bird, no other—I never forget him, not even for an hour.
My bird flies without rest, I do not ask it to stop for a moment
O good folk, why did you not frighten whoever frightened him?
O people of virtue, why don't you watch over one who watches?

My tears pour forth, and the fire of my longing never dies down.
My tears pour and the fire of my passion does not die down
And I have a heart that shows obedience to love.
And my heart shows obedience to love

I am the lovesick wanderer, fasting from love for anyone else.
I wander, fasting from the love of others
I keep vigil through my night; I do not doze for even an hour.
My night stays awake, I do not sleep a moment of it

I lament love's anguish, but you have added nothing but rejection.
I complain of passion, but you only respond with indifference
So have mercy on a slave whose pains you have made manifold.
So have mercy on a slave whose pains you have diversified

I have no patience—how can I be patient, O full moon?
I have no patience, how can I be patient, O full moon?
And this estrangement has made my ever-craving soul wretched.
For this separation has made my greedy soul miserable

Estrangement has exceeded all bounds, and nothing heals the distraught lover
Separation and sorrow have overwhelmed me, and the ardour of passion does not bring relief
Like forgetting love—but my soul keeps yearning.
Like the nightshade, but my soul is quarrelsome

Parting has shown me many forms of wasting sickness and death.
Separation has shown me all kinds of sorrows and love for the beautiful one
And my love for the fair one is more than I can bear.
Has soared in me beyond restraint

Unending rejection has left the languishing lover no vigor.
The persistence of indifference has left no strength for the suffering one
And the figure's suppleness stirs his desires within him.
And the softness of the hand kindles its greed
