وهي المنى ما ان تنيل مؤملا
How long shall I await reunion, consoling myself?
I eagerly wait for our reunion, though that is not to be,
These are wishes that never grant what is hoped for.
And the wishes I dreamed of were doomed by wretchedness, never to be fulfilled.

ومن الشقاوة روم ما لن يحصلا
Those are the hopes I cherished,
The night spreads its veil, bringing along its worries,
and misery lies in seeking what will never be attained.
Both alike being hated guests in my abode.

Night darkens over me, bringing its sorrow,
I know not which of the two tormented me more
and both are unwelcome lodgers with me.
And drew my flowing tears that went on and on.

I could not tell which of the two, despite the grief it caused
How can life feel pleasant when my eyes
and the tears it drew from me, had lasted longer.
Saw nothing but fleeting visions and mirages?

Strange are the ruins, lifeless,
my gaze has seen only the ruins still standing?
Yet they revive my love and wear out my bones.

Wondrous they remain, though inanimate, melting me,

Alas, I can no longer endure the shaking.

How much can wishes bear if I lack the strength?
with grief; I can no longer bear to stir.
But still I hope and persevere.

and how much I grow in forbearance and endurance!
Veering from one course to another.

nothing to distract me from remembering those who frequented their grounds.
I do not seek to replace her with another.

Love has overwhelmed me until
a tale there, freely flowing and linked in a chain.
I see their beauty embodied before me.

I would not have sought other company.

I would choose no midday resting-place outside these ruins.
Until I find rest in their land.

My patience with them has departed.

If I had no link to the darling of my soul

I would search my heart where they resided.

love has robbed my strength of the power to endure.
No liberation or refuge from them.

The supreme in excellence and status.

Let he who composes poetry mention them,
and go too far in speech, an interloper and a freeloader.
for that mention suffices, though he profess his love.

Embarrassed before God, clad in humility.

But this poetry loses its essence to me
of it—by your Lord—wrapped in shame.
As I do not seek through it anything other than them.
