    An ornate letter came to me from a dear friend,

    each of its letters bearing beauty and lustre.

    I grew intoxicated with longing as I inhaled its fragrance,

    and why not, when the scent of roses wafts from it?

    Ah, how lovely that perfume, and how lovely

    the breeze that bears it toward me ahead of glad tidings.

    To God I lament what I have suffered from separation,

    and the heat of heartache that nearly made my soul depart.

    I stayed, while my loved ones traveled by land and sea,

    against my wishes, with my circle scattered.

    إذ حان سبح كدت بالدمع أغرق

    Since they departed, I have never ceased to be longing's companion;

    when the time for sailing came, I almost drowned in tears.

    So in my captive heart I hoard love,

    and from my brimming eye I spend my tears.

    غريب عليل فاقد متشوق

    Sorrowful, gaunt, lovesick, expectant;

    a stranger, ailing, bereft, full of longing.

    Nor do I have patience whose reward can be hoped for,

    nor am I fortunate enough to find consolation.

    وهل يؤخذن يوماً على الدهر موثق

    Nor can my days be trusted to bring reunion;

    and can a binding pledge ever be exacted from time?

    I yearn to meet them, aching with longing,

    whenever my night companion, the star, appears and unsettles me.

    And when the sun's horn rises, I fancy that it

    conveys a greeting from them to me and speaks.

    For I see in it signs of their beauty,

    and in every beauty, a reminder of what the heart loves.

    I soothe a love-bewildered heart with hopes,

    yet no faith in wishing remains within it.

    It flies with me toward them in longing, yet I

    am a captive of love for them, bound by my separation.

    And it flutters at the mention of their name, so that

    I imagine my very bed fluttering because of it.

    فكيف وباب الوصل دوني مغلق

    And I shed tears that flowed even when they were near;

    how much more, with the door of union shut against me?

    When will God bring the lovers together for an hour,

    and the veils of separation be torn apart after reunion?

    And many a separation has sustained what

    a yearning lover hopes for from nearness to loved ones.

    For God has mysteries hard to explain,

    and time has turns that distress and delight.
