منwhoever حاربfought العينthe eye خانتهbetrayed him مضاربهhis blades
من حارب العين خانته مضاربه
وليسand does not يجديهbenefit him شحذsharpening السيفthe sword عنin defense of جلدهhis skin
وليس يجديه شحذ السيف عن جلده
Whoever fights the eye is betrayed by his blades.
He who battles the eye, its blows betray him,
Nor does sharpening the sword help him defend his skin.
Nor avails him to sharpen his sword against its skin.
فمضربfor the edge السيفthe sword مشحوذsharpened علىon حجرa stone
فمضرب السيف مشحوذ على حجر
ومضربand the edge الطرفthe gaze مشحوذsharpened علىon كبدهhis liver
ومضرب الطرف مشحوذ على كبده
For the sword’s edge is sharpened on a stone,
The sword may be sharpened to strike flint,
And the gaze’s edge is sharpened on his liver.
But the glance is sharpened on the liver within.
