- أبصره عاذلي عليهMy friend saw me bewitched by love
- أبي عزمة السلوان قلب متيمA love-stricken heart has refused the resolve to forget;
- أبيحي دمي يا أم عمرو أو أحقنيPermit my blood to be shed, O Umm ʿAmr, or spare it;
- أجك حتى صرت أغسل ناظريI so revere you that I have taken to washing my eye
- أحق ملك بأن تعنو له الأممThe kingdom most worthy of having the nations bow before it
- إذا أحمد القطان غنى توقفتWhen Ahmad al-Qattan sings, they pause—
- إذا استصعب الإنسان إمساك نفسهIf a person finds it hard to restrain himself,
- إذا صح بولك فاضرب بهIf your urine is sound, then strike with it
- إذا عظم القدر الرفيق مناطهWhen worth is great and its bearer gentle,
- إذا غردت قمرية خال صيحةIf a moon-like beauty cries out a complaint against him
- إذا لم يكن في بذل وجهك طائلIf offering up your dignity brings no gain,
- إذا ما عقدنا منة عند جاحدWhenever we bestow a favor upon an ingrate,
- إذا هبت رياحك فاغتنمهاWhen your winds blow, make the most of them,
- إذا ولت الدنيا عن المرء أقبلتWhen the world turns away from a man, there comes
- أرخى لعارضه العذار فماHe let the down along his cheek grow, and so
- أرى الخمر نارا والنفوس جواهراI see wine as fire, and souls as gems.
- أرى ذا النقص لا يعبأ بذمI see that one with faults cares nothing for reproach;
- أصبح من ودي على حرفHe now stands on the edge of my affection—
- أصبحت لا أدري ولا ليلى درتI no longer know, nor does Layla know,
- اصبر إذا ما عرتك نائبةBe patient when a calamity befalls you;
- أطال بين البلاد تجواليMy wandering among the lands has been prolonged
- اكفنا زحمة الذباب بإبعاRid us of the flies’ crush by keeping away
- ألا رب مولى غرني في عهودهAh, many a friend has deceived me in his pledges—
- ألا ليت شعري كيف أشكر بعض ماAh, would that I knew how to give thanks for some of what
- ألا من لقلب بالفراق مروعAh, who is there for a heart terrified by separation,
- الآن قد صحت لدي شهادةNow a testimony has indeed been confirmed for me:
- الحر يرسب دائما في ذلةThe noble man always sinks into abasement,
- الضيم والموت عند الحر في قرنEnglish translation available
- العيب في الرجل المذكور مذكورA fault in a well-known man is talked about;
- أما من صاحب أشكو لديهIs there no friend to whom I may complain,
- انصبت الخمر على كمهThe wine spilled onto his sleeve;
- أوصى الفقيه العسكريThe jurist al-ʿAskarī advised me
- أيا أملي دون كل الورىO my hope above all humankind,
- أيا بدرا بلا كلفO full moon without a single spot,
- أيا عاجزا ما في البرية عاجزO inept one, no inept soul in creation
- أيها الساقي أدر كأس العقارO cupbearer, pass round the cup of wine.
- أيها الكاتب الذي حير الخلO scribe who has bewildered creation
- بخبزه الممنوع أم مائهWas it with his withheld bread, or his water,
- بلاد بها خصب وغصب تساوياA land where plenty and plunder were equal,
- بناه مكارم وأساة كلمBuilders of noble deeds and healers of wounds;
- تالله تعذرني العلاBy God, lofty glory excuses me,
- تأن فالمرء إن تأنىTake your time, for if a person takes his time,
- تركت عليك دنيا خضت فيهاI have left you the world you plunged into,
- تزوج والقوت عن نفسهHe married, though sustenance for himself
- تصبر إذا الهم أسرى إليكBe patient when sorrow journeys to you by night;
- تطايرت الأخبار من كل جانبNews flew in from every side,
- تعانقنا لتوديع عشاءWe embraced in farewell one evening,
- تعرض لي الدنيا بلذة مطعمThe world offers itself to me with the pleasure of food,
- تعلم أحكام النجوم إضاعةLearning the judgments of stars is a waste
- تقول لو كان عاشقا دنفاShe says, “If he were a lover wasting away,
- تمنيت من أهوى فلما لقيتهI longed for the one I love; but when I met him,
- جربت إخواننا فكلهمEnglish translation available
- جرى قلم القضاء بما يكونRoamed the pen of fate with what will be
- حجابك إحسان إلى من حجبتهYour refusal of access is a kindness to the one you turn away.
- خذ الحلم ما أغنى فإن كان مفسداPractice forbearance as long as it avails; but if it corrupts
- خلع الجمال على عذارك خلعةBeauty bestowed upon your cheek-down a robe of honor
- خلعت عذاري في شادنI cast off my bridle for a young gazelle,
- خليلي ليس الرأي ما تريانMy two friends, sound judgment is not what you two think.
- دع الطين معتقدا مذهبيLeave clay alone, embracing my doctrine:
- دعاوى الناس في الدنيا فنونPeople's claims in this world are manifold;
- دعتني الري من بعد فقلت لهاAl-Rayy summoned me from afar, and I said to her:
- رأيت العود مشتقاI saw the lute derived
- رب روض خلت آذرMany a garden—I imagined its marigolds,
- رب هم على الفؤاد جثومMany a sorrow crouched heavily upon the heart;
- رياض أماني الرجال أنيقةThe gardens of men's wishes are lovely,
- سألت زماني وهو بالجهل مولعI asked my age, enamored as it is of ignorance,
- سلا الدمع على قلبي المعذب هل سلاThe tears found solace over my tormented heart—but has it found solace?
- سلام على الدار التي لا أزورهاPeace be upon the house that I do not visit,
- صار التصرف صرفاHolding office has become a turning-away
- صح بخيل العلى إلى الغاياتUrge the steeds of glory onward to the goals!
- صدق أباك أبا السماحProve your father right, O Abu al-Samah,
- ضعت بأرض الري في أهلهاI was lost in the land of Rayy among its people,
- ظبي إذا قتل النفوس بصارمA gazelle—when he slays souls with a keen sword
- عابوه لما التحى فقلناThey faulted him when he grew a beard, so we said:
- عارض ورد الغصون وجنتهThe rose upon the boughs rivaled his cheek;
- عجبت لقولنج هذا الوزيرI marveled at this minister's colic:
- فأمطرت لؤلؤا من نرجس وسقتSo she rained pearls from narcissus and watered
- قالوا أشتغل عنهم يوما بغيرهمThey said, “Distract yourself from them one day with others,”
- قالوا صحا قلب المحب وما صحاThey said the lover’s heart had sobered—but it had not.
- قد كان يحكيه صوب الغيث منسكباThe pouring rain would indeed resemble him,
- قد كفاني من المدام شميمA mere whiff of wine has sufficed me.
- قل لابن عبدان الدنى الدونSay to Ibn Abdan, the lowly and base:
- قوض خيامك من أرض تضام بهاStrike your tents and leave a land where you are wronged.
- قولا لهذا القمر الباديYou two, tell this moon now appearing:
- قوم هم الآساد بأسا والظبيA people who are lions in valor, and sword-edges
- كأن الزمان فسا على الأحرارIt is as though Time has farted on the freeborn;
- كانت ليالينا قصرن بوصلكمOur nights had grown short through union with you,
- كدأبك كل لا يرى غير نفسهAs is your way, everyone sees only himself.
- كفى بك لست ركنا من شروريYou are enough, I am no pillar of evils,
- كفى فؤادي عذاره حرقهHis cheek-down spared my heart its burning pain,
- كم كم ملح على أذاهHow many, how many witticisms accompany his abuse!
- كيف أرجو السماح أو أبتغيهHow can I hope for pardon or seek it
- لا تتعبن النفس في آلةDo not weary your soul over a means
- لا تفخرن بما أحرزت من أدبDo not boast of the learning you have acquired.
- لا تمرحن مع الشريف فيعتديDo not jest with the noble, lest he transgress
- لا تنكري يا عز إن ذل الفتىDo not find it strange, O ʿAzz, if a youth is brought low,
- لا خير في طبرستان وجرجانThere is no good in Tabaristan and Jurjan.
- لا يضع الفقر من علا همميPoverty does not diminish the loftiness of my aspirations,
- لا ينتظر فزعا من قلبي الجزعLet anguish expect no fear from my heart,
- لا يؤيسنك من مجد تباعدهDo not let glory’s remoteness make you despair of it,
- لعن الله مبدع التفخيذMay God curse the inventor of intercrural sex.
- لم يستجب لحياتي بعدكم فرحNo joy has answered my life in your absence;
- لم ييأس الكلب من ملك وسلطانThe dog did not despair of a kingdom and power
- لنا ملك ما فيه للملك آلةWe have a king with no qualification for kingship,
- لها من ضلوعي أن يشب وقودهاShe may have the fuel of my ribs kindled,
- لو مات لم يأكل الطعام إذاEven if he were dying, he would not eat food if
- ليت العناق وشرب الراح قد عقداWould that embracing and a draught of wine had been bound
- ليت إن الليل دامت ظلمهIf only the night's darkness would endure!
- ليس الشجاعة كلها خوض الردىThe bravest are not those who rush into fray
- ليس بي من أذى الفراق اكتئابI feel no grief from the pain of parting;
- ما للمعيل وللمعالي إنماWhat has a man with dependents to do with lofty aims? Only
- مات الكرام فماتت مني الهممThe noble have died, and my aspirations have died within me.
- مالي في عذريتي عذرI have no excuse for my virginity.
- من قاس جدواك بالغمام فماWhoever compares your bounty to the cloud has not
- ناظرة في شفتيها بهاA seeing eye is in its two lips; through it
- هذا سروري بأبي عامرThis joy of mine in Abu Amir
- هززت إليك الشعر سهلا قيادهI set verse moving toward you, its reins easy to handle,
- وأجدر من أشركتم في نعيمكمAnd the worthiest of those you let share in your bliss
- وإذا جزعت من الذي هو فائتAnd if you grieve over what is lost,
- وإذا رأيت الفضل فاز به الفتىAnd when you see a young man attain excellence,
- وإذا كلمت تعلما فاعمل بهAnd when you have become accomplished in learning, act upon it.
- والسيف أحسن ما تلفى مضاربهAnd the sword’s striking edges are seen at their finest
- وإن لصرف الدهر بين جوانحيAnd indeed, within my breast, time’s vicissitudes wage
- وجريح وجهه قلAnd one whose face is wounded—my
- وحقك ما أخرت كتبي عنكمBy your honor, I have not delayed sending you my letters
- وحملت شعري كاهل الريح بعد ماI set my poetry upon the wind’s shoulder, after
- ودوحة أنس أصبحت ثمراتهاAnd a spreading tree of fellowship, whose fruits became
- وساق تقلد لما أتىLean thighs girded when he came
- وعهد شباب قد خلعت جديدهAnd I bestowed the fresh robe of my youthful days
- وكافر بالمعاد أمسىAnd a denier of resurrection began
- وكنت تركت الشعر آنف من خناI had abandoned poetry earlier out of boredom
- ولما أن تعانقنا سحقناAnd when we embraced, we crushed
- ولولا اكتساب الحمد ما رمت ثروةWere it not for gaining praise, I would not seek wealth,
- وليس كمال المرء أن يدرك الغنىA person's perfection lies not in attaining wealth,
- وما قعدت بي سلوة عن زيارتيAnd it was not forgetfulness that kept me from visiting
- ومن مبلغ عني الأمير ابن بويهAnd who will carry my message to the emir, Ibn Buwayh?
- وهمة في المعالي كنت أكبتهاI used to suppress any ambition,
- ويكاد من كرم الطباع وليدهمAnd so generous by nature is their newborn that he almost
- يا ذا الذي يعتدO you who prize
- يا ذا الذي يلقى بباO you who find in an egg-
- يا سيف إن تدرك بحاشية اللوىO sword, if at the edge of al-Liwā you exact
- يا من محياه كاسمه حسنO you whose face, like your name, is Ḥasan—beautiful!
- يا هاجرا لي بغير جرمسO you who forsake me though I have done no wrong,
- يا ويح فضلي أما في الناس من رجلAlas for my worth! Is there no man among the people
- يسر بخزن المال قوم ولم أكنSome people delight in hoarding wealth, but I was never
- يسر زماني أن أناط بأهلهIt pleases my age that I am linked to its people;
- يطلب الغائص في بحره الؤلؤThe diver searches the depths for pearls
- يقولون لي ما بال عينك مذ رأتThey say to me, “Why, since your eye beheld
- يهيج مسرتي جرب بكفيScabies on my palm stirs my joy,
- يؤلمه مضغي من خبزهMy chewing some of his bread pains him,
