لا تنكري يا عزُّ إن ذَل الفَتَى

لا تنكري يا عزُّ إن ذَل الفَتَى

ذو الأصلِ واستعلى لَئيمُ المحِتدِ

ذو الأصلِ واستعلى لَئيمُ المحِتدِ

Do not find it strange, O ʿAzz, if a youth is brought low,

Do not deny, O dear, that the noble youth

Though of noble lineage, while one of base descent rises high.

Of noble origin has been abased, while the base one has risen high.

إن البُزاةَ رُؤُوسُهُنَّ عواطلٌ

إن البُزاةَ رُؤُوسُهُنَّ عواطلٌ

والتاجُ معقودٌ برأسِ الُهدهُدِ

والتاجُ معقودٌ برأسِ الُهدهُدِ

For the hawks’ heads are unadorned,

Verily the queens, their heads are mere trinkets,

And the crown is fastened upon the hoopoe’s head.

While the crown is tied on the head of the lapwing.
