ناظرةٌa seeing eye فيin شفَتيهاits two lips بهاthrough it
ناظرةٌ في شفَتيها بها
قدindeed أبصرَتhas seen عينيmy eye ولمand did not تُبصرsee
قد أبصرَت عيني ولم تُبصر
A seeing eye is in its two lips; through it
My eyes have seen the glances of her lips
My eye has seen, yet that eye has not seen.
Though she looked my way, she did not see
إنif يسقنيhe gives me drink الكأسَthe cup نديميmy drinking companion أنَمI sleep
إن يسقني الكأسَ نديمي أنَم
وهذهand this one إنif تَسقِهاyou give it drink تَسهَرِit stays awake
وهذه إن تَسقِها تَسهَرِ
If my drinking companion gives me the cup, I sleep;
If my companion pours me a cup, I'll sleep
But this one, if you give it drink, stays awake.
But if he pours for her, she'll stay awake
