لاdo not تُتعِبَنَّweary (emphatic) النَّفسَthe soul فيover آلةٍa means
لا تُتعِبَنَّ النَّفسَ في آلةٍ
تسموyou rise بهاby means of it للأملtoward the hope النازحfar-off
تسمو بها للأمل النازح
Do not weary your soul over a means
Do not weary your soul in a machine
By which to rise toward a far-off hope.
That you use to aspire to fleeting hope
إنindeed المقاديرَthe fates إذاwhen ساعدتwere favorable
إن المقاديرَ إذا ساعدت
الحقتmade catch up القاعدَthe idle man بالكادحwith the toiler
الحقت القاعدَ بالكادح
For when the fates are favorable,
Verily when fates are favorable
They let the idle man catch up with the toiler.
The sedentary overtakes the toiler
أماdo you not ترىsee الأسودَthe black man كيفhow اعتلىrose high
أما ترى الأسودَ كيف اعتلى
إلىto ذرىthe summits of الآفاقِthe horizons بالقازحby the erect phallus
إلى ذرى الآفاقِ بالقازح
Do you not see how the black man has risen
Do you not see the lion how it climbed
To the summits of the horizons by the erect phallus?
To the highest horizons with bold strides
