أمَاIs there not منany صاحبٍfriend أشكُوI complain لَدَيهِbefore him
وأَملأُand I fill بالشِّكايَةِwith complaints مَسمَعيهhis two ears
Is there no friend to whom I may complain,
and fill both his ears with complaints?
إذاwhenever زَمَنan age ذَمَمناهwe condemned it تَوَلىpassed
أَتَىcame زَمَنٌan age يُشوِّقُناmakes us long إليهfor it
Whenever an age we condemned passes,
another age comes that makes us long for it.
لَعَنَّاwe cursed العامريَّal-ʿĀmirī وكَانَand he was حَيَّاalive
فحينthen when مَضَىhe passed away تَرَحَّمنَاwe prayed for mercy عليهupon him
We cursed al-ʿĀmirī while he was alive;
then, when he passed away, we prayed for mercy upon him.
