ماتَhave died الكِرامُthe noble فماتَتso died مِنِّيَwithin me الهِمَمُaspirations
وعدمُand the poverty of مِثليone like me دَليلٌis proof أنَّهُمthat they عدِمواare no more
The noble have died, and my aspirations have died within me.
The poverty of one like me proves that they are no more.
آلَمتُmay I cause pain to إنسانthe pupil of عينيmy eye بلnay فجعتُmay I be bereft بهِof it
إنif كنتُI am أبصرُI see إنساناًa person لهُhe has كَرَمُgenerosity
May I pain the pupil of my eye—nay, may I be bereft of it—
If I see a single person possessed of generosity.
لهفيmy grief علىover نِعَمٍblessings أندىhave prospered بهاthrough them نِعَمٌcattle
دونَrather than الكِرامِthe noble وغُنمٌand spoils حازهacquired it غَنَمُsheep
Alas for blessings through which cattle have prospered,
Rather than the noble, and for spoils acquired by sheep.
