O sword, if at the edge of al-Liwā you exact

the vengeance for which I made your edge a debtor,

I shall make your scabbard of cast silver,

and fashion you a hilt of chrysolite.

Be a scatterer of heads—may my soul be your ransom—

so that I may string verses together in praise of your temper.

Did my sword-polishers suckle you on the water of death

for any purpose but that you should suckle me on streaming blood?
