ياO مَنone whose مُحَيَّاهhis face كاسمهlike his name حسنُbeautiful; Hasan
إنif نِمتَyou sleep عنِّيheedless of me فليسthen there is no ليfor me وسَنُdrowsiness
O you whose face, like your name, is Ḥasan—beautiful!
O you whose face, like your name Hasan, is beautiful!
If you sleep, heedless of me, I know no sleep.
If you sleep, heedless of me, I have no drowsiness.
قدalready كنتُI was قبلbefore العذارِthe cheek-down فيin مِحَنٍafflictions
حتىuntil تَبَدَّىit appeared فَزَادتِand so increased المحنُthe afflictions
Even before the first down on your cheek, I was sorely tried,
I was already in affliction before the cheek-down,
until it appeared—and multiplied my trials.
Until it appeared, and the afflictions increased.
ياO شعراتhairs جميعهاall of them فِتَنُtemptations

O tiny hairs, every one of you a temptation!
O hairs, every one of them a temptation!
Keen minds lose their way in describing your true essence.
In describing their true nature, keen minds lose their way.
ماnot غيرواthey altered منof عذارِهhis cheek-down سفهاًout of folly
قدalready كانhe was غُصناًa branch فأورَقَand so put forth leaves الغُصنُthe branch
Those who found fault with his cheek-down did so foolishly:
They did not alter his cheek-down out of folly:
it was a bough, and now the bough has put forth leaves.
He was a branch, and the branch put forth leaves.
