إنماonly الربحُgain لأصحابِfor those who incur الخَسارloss
O cupbearer, pass round the cup of wine.
Gain belongs only to those who lose.

منfrom أمانيكyour hopes ففيfor in الحالِthe present state اختصارbrevity
Give us a stolen moment of life, and cut back
on your hopes, for the present is brief.

إنَّindeed جُرحَthe injury of الخمرِwine عنديin my view لُجَبارsurely without compensation
And forgive the lapse of anyone in my company:
for wine's wounds, to me, call for no compensation.
واقرعand tap السِّنَthe teeth بكأسٍwith a cup وأزِلand remove

And tap my teeth with a cup, and banish
my gnashing of teeth over lost wealth.

All my wealth is pledged; it has no
redemption, evening or early morning.

For my heart is forever pledged to passion,
and my cloak is forever pawned for wine.
ولقدand indeed أمرحُI frolic فيin شَرخِthe prime of الصبِّاyouth
مَرَحَthe frolicking of الُمهرَةِthe filly فيwithin ثِنيthe fold of العِذارthe bridle
And indeed I frolic in the prime of youth
like a filly frolicking within the bridle's loop.

I join drunkenness to drunkenness, just as
[a link] of night was joined to day.

If you saw my garment dyed with it,
you would say, 'A dhimmi has appeared in his distinctive garb.'

Or if you saw me swaying from my intoxication,
you would say, 'He walks over sand or soft, uneven ground.'
