When the world turns away from a man, there comes
When the world turns away from a man,
to him the censure of foes and friends.
The foes come to him slandering, false friends also.

If a man does not set out by night for wealth, he remains
When a man does not strive for wealth,
with his bonds and ties to wealth severed.
He is soon deprived of friends and intimates.

I have examined the companions of the age and found nothing
I studied friends of the times, but found
rarer to find than a like-minded friend.
None with more generous spirit than an old friend.
