إذا لم يكن في بَذلِ وَجهِكَ طَائلٌ

إذا لم يكن في بَذلِ وَجهِكَ طَائلٌ

فلا تُحرَمن أن لا يمسَّكَ عَارُ

فلا تُحرَمن أن لا يمسَّكَ عَارُ

If offering up your dignity brings no gain,

If there is no use in offering your face,

then do not forfeit being untouched by disgrace.

Then do not be denied that dishonor does not touch you.

وإني لأحسُو الموتَ فيه كرامةٌ

وإني لأحسُو الموتَ فيه كرامةٌ

وألفظُ حُلوَ العَيشِ فيه صَغَارُ

وألفظُ حُلوَ العَيشِ فيه صَغَارُ

And indeed I sip death when there is honor in it,

And I do consider death honorable in it,

and spit out the sweetness of life when there is humiliation in it.

And I spit out the sweetness of life as trivial in it.
