والسيفand the sword أحسنُfinest ماwhen تُلفَىare found مَضَاربُهits striking edges
والسيف أحسنُ ما تُلفَى مَضَاربُه
إذاwhen استقلَّit is raised بِكَفِin the hand of الفارسِthe horseman البطلِthe valiant one
إذا استقلَّ بِكَفِ الفارسِ البطلِ
And the sword’s striking edges are seen at their finest
The sword is best when its blade is unsheathed
when it is raised in the hand of the valiant horseman.
In the grip of the heroic knight.
إذاif جَعَلتُكI make you ليfor me ظهراًa support ومعتصماًand a refuge
إذا جَعَلتُك لي ظهراً ومعتصماً
وساورتنيand assail me صروفُvicissitudes الدهرِof time لمnot أبلِI care
وساورتني صروفُ الدهرِ لم أبلِ
If I make you my support and refuge,
If I make you my pillar and refuge,
and the vicissitudes of time assail me, I care not.
Though fate assails me, I'll not quail.
