A mere whiff of wine has sufficed me.
The scent of wine has quenched my thirst,
Reason has made peace with me, and resolve has returned.
Abstinence benefits me now, determination prevails.
هيit (wine) جُهدُthe strain العقولِof minds سُمِّيwas named راحاًrāḥ (wine; suggesting repose)
مثلُjust like ماwhat قيلَwas said للَّديغof one bitten or stung السليمُthe unharmed
It strains minds, yet is called rāḥ—a name suggesting repose—
It taxes the mind yet deemed pleasant,
just as one bitten or stung is called 'unharmed.'
Like the healthy call a scorpion's sting salubrious.
إنif تكنit is جَنَّةُthe garden النعيمof bliss ففيهاthen within it
منfrom أذىthe suffering الجهلِof ignorance والُخمَارِand hangover جحيمُa hell
If it is a paradise of bliss, within it
If Paradise be a garden of bliss,
lies a hell of suffering brought by ignorance and hangovers.
Therein is a Hell of ignorance and drunkenness.
