مُغرِّقِي في لُجَّةِ الغامرِ
This joy of mine in Abu Amir
This is my joy for Abu Amer
drowns me in the depths of the engulfing sea.
Plunging me into the depths of peril
فتىًa young man إذاif جاراهvied with him فيin مَفخرٍa feat of glory
فتىً إذا جاراه في مَفخرٍ
مُساجِلٌa challenger خاطَرَrisked بالخاطِرwith his wit
مُساجِلٌ خاطَرَ بالخاطِر
A young man—if he is rivaled in a feat of glory,
A young man, if his peers vied with him in glory
the challenger risks his wit.
Contending, thought met thought

والنظمُ عينٌ وهو كالناظرِ
Prose is a body, and [he] is its soul;
Prose is a body and poetry its soul
and verse is an eye, and he is like its pupil.
And verse is an eye while prose but looks on
