She may have the fuel of my ribs kindled,

And the necklaces of my tears unstrung.

Were flying, her swift tread doing the rocks no harm.

She bears them toward the sea of virtues and glory,

And none shall master the heights except their slaves.

Confident that success would rain upon them.

And a gray battle, whose blood turns gray steeds bay

When it clashes, and whose dust turns bay steeds gray,

Appeared before us in a meadow where lances sprout,

Watered with blood from necks, in its lowlands and uplands.

The cupbearers of white swords and brown lances passed round among us

Cups of death, when their iron sang.

You quenched the birds' thirst from it, lavishly providing

Their feast, with champions' heads as witnesses to it.

Clouds: the flashing of swords is their lightning,

And there the rumbling of horses is their thunder.

By the rain-star of sword-edges: deaths red and black.

And beginning deeds of generosity and repeating them.

Through you we clothed the poems in pride and adornment,

So their verse pitched its tent between the two Shiʿrā stars.

    ولولاك ما جاز اللهاةَ نشيدُها

    And riders bore them through every town;

But for you, their song would not have passed the uvula.
