Our nights had grown short through union with you,
Our nights were brief with your companionship
until your abandonment struck them and made them long.
Until your estrangement made them long

أهوى لها حّرُّ الهوى فأسألها
And when the tears froze at your coldness,
And when tears congealed at your aloofness
passion's heat swooped down upon them and set them flowing.
The fervor of passion melted them to flow again

Had the one who occupied the heart with love for you wished,
If He who preoccupies hearts with love of you willed
he would have restored the days of the protected grounds and restored their sway.
He would bring back the days of intimacy and shorten them
