منthe one whom لمnot أخُنهI betray him قطُّever فيin حرفِa word
He now stands on the edge of my affection—
he whom I have never betrayed in a single word.
أسقمنيmade me ill طَرفُكyour gaze منfrom سُقمِهِits sickness
وصحَّتيand my health فيin سَقَمsickness الطَّرفِthe gaze
Your gaze has made me ill with its own sickness,
and my health lies in the sickness of the gaze.

والنفخand blowing مُذكيkindler of النارthe fire والُمطفيand the extinguisher
From you come my well-being and my ruin together,
and blowing both kindles the fire and puts it out.
صُوِّرتَyou were fashioned منfrom لُطفٍgentleness فَلِمso why لاnot أرىI see
منكfrom you سوىexcept الجفوةِcoldness والعنفِand harshness
You were fashioned from gentleness—why, then, do I see nothing
from you but coldness and harshness?
