والكأسُand the cup يَمرَحُfrolics فيin يديmy hand
والكأسُ يَمرَحُ في يدي
By God, lofty glory excuses me,
The hills torment me
While the cup frolics in my hand.
As the cup frolics in my hand,

والحربُ لم تضرِب بنا

خَيشوم نقعٍ أربَدِ
And war has not used us to strike
And war has not struck at us
The snout of a dusky cloud of dust;
With the nose of a dripping flask,

مٌ لم تَطِر بمُهَنَّدِ
And my enemies' heads remain
And the heads of my enemies lie fallen
Motionless, not sent flying by a sword of Indian steel.

لَمُنِي لطعنٍ اجردِ
Woe to the mother of an age that does not hand
And time passes inexorably
Me over to the thrust of a bare lance!
Without a stab from my keen blade,

Its days have tossed us about,
Its days disquiet us
So it is as though we were in a provision-bag.
As though we were in a crucible,

I hope for tomorrow and say, 'Perhaps
I hope for tomorrow and I say maybe
Tomorrow'—but who can assure me of tomorrow?
There is no tomorrow - who do I have for tomorrow?
