خيار حين تنسبه خيار
A cucumber, when you attribute to it being a cucumber
يقيني يقيني حادثات النوائب
My certainty, my certainty of afflictions of misfortune,
أعطى الشباب من الآراب ما طلبا
Youth granted me whatsoever I desired
هبوا طيفكم أعدى على النأي مسراه
Let your specter wander far from me,
صروف المنايا ليس يودي قتيلها
The vicissitudes of fate do not spare their victim,
يا نسيم الصبا الولوع بوجدي
O gentle breeze blowing towards my love's abode,
من كان مثل أبي علي فلينل
If one were like my father Ali
جرى لك بالتوفيق أيمن طائر
Good fortune smiled on you, auspicious bird,
ألا هكذا فليحرز الحمد والأجرا
Indeed, thusly should praise and reward be gained,
أفيض دموع أم سيول تموج
Is it a torrent of tears or surging floods,
أدنى اشتياقي أن أبيت عليلا
My slightest yearning is that you fall ill,
أرى العلياء واضحة السبيل
I see the eminent path clearly
لئن عداني زمان عن لقائكم
If time has kept me from meeting you
إذا لم يكن من حادث الدهر موئل
When fate has no turning, and grief avails you naught,
يا مفلت الظبية الغناء من يده
O you who let the singing gazelle slip through his hands
ببهاء وجهك تشرق الأنوار
With the radiance of your face the lights shine bright
يا قبر ما للمجد عندك فاحتفظ
O grave, glory is naught to you so keep
نفضت يدي من الآمال لما
I shook off hopes when I saw their reins
كم ذا التجنب والتجني
How oft this shunning, this offense!
يحتاج في الشعر إلى طلاوه
Poetry needs a sweetness
إذا عز نفسي عن هواك قصورها
When my soul is too weak to reach your love,
هي الديار فعج في رسمها العاري
It is the abode, so roam in its near traces
وافى كتابك أسنى ما يعود به
Your book brought the best gift
سوى باكيك من ينهى العذول
None but the bereaved will forbid bereavement
ألا أيها العضب الذي ليس نابيا
O sword that is neither blunt nor sheathed but sharpened for events
أهدى الأمير إليك خير تحية
The prince sends you the best of greetings
ألم أك للقوافي الغر خدنا
Was I not gentle with rhymes, taming
أنت للمسلمين حصن وحرز
You are a fortress and refuge for Muslims,
أتطمع في الود من زاهد
Do you hope for love from an ascetic?
لاح الهلال كما تعوج مرهفا
The crescent moon shone twisted and bent,
لم يبق عندي ما يباع بحبة
I have nothing left that's worth a single date
أقول واليوم بهيم خطبه
I say, and today is an inarticulate day, its discourse gloomy
أروح وقلبي عنك ليس برائح
I depart, but my heart does not forget you
يا حسنه قمرا وأنت سماؤه
O beauty, you are the moon and its sky
سواي لمن لم يعشق المجد عاشق
My excuse for those who do not love glory as a lover
ما على فضلك ذا من مفضل
None can match your generosity,
أيام دهرك كلها أعياد
All the days of your life are festive
قد عدتني فشفيت من سقمي
You have cured me and healed my sickness
أترى الهلال أنار ضوء جبينه
Do you see the crescent whose radiant brow
أنا والندى سيفان في
I and the dew are swords in
لو كنت شاهد عبرتي يوم النقا
Had you witnessed my tears the day we parted,
دعتني حاجة فبعثت وفدا
A need summoned me, so I sent a delegation
لقد جاوزت فيك مقدارها
You have endured tribulations beyond your limit,
أتاني أن المجد عني سائل
News reached me that glory was asking about me
يا أيها النجم ما وفيته لقبا
O star, I did not do justice by calling you that
أبعدك أتقي نوب الزمان
Without you I avoid the strokes of fate
لاح الهلال فما يكاد يرى
The crescent moon appears, barely to be seen
أصون لساني والجنان يذال
I guard my tongue though yearning still prevails,
قولا لفخراور قول امرئ
Say to the vainglorious crow, say to him
يا بن من شاد المعالي جوده
O son of him whose generosity built the highest ideals,
يد لك عندي لا تؤدى حقوقها
A hand of yours I have that can never repay
أبا المجد كم لك من طالب
O Father of Glory, how many seekers
قل للعميد عميد الملك إن له
Tell the commander, commander of the kingdom, that he
سقوه كأس فرقتهم دهاقا
They made him drink the chalice of their parting in deep draughts,
بنفسي على قربه النازح
With my soul, I approach his tomb,
ألم تك للملوك الغر تاجا
Were you not a crown for the virtuous kings,
دار يدور بها السرور
A house where joy eternally dwells
أما الزمان فلم يزل ينحي
The times have always dealt
أما والهوى يوم استقل فريقها
When the one I love departed one day
ألا هكذا تستهل البدور
Behold, thus fortunes are inaugurated,
يا بن الحسين وأنت من غرس الندى
O son of Hussein, you who planted benevolence
ألا فتى من صروف الدهر يحميني
Alas! Is there no valiant youth to shield me
أبا أحمد كيف استجزت جفائي
O Abu Ahmad, how could you bear my aloofness
لعمر أبي العطاء لئن تولى
For the life of my father al-'Ata, if he turns away
ويعتادني ذكراك في كل حالة
Your memory occupies me in every state,
يا مؤذيا بالنار جسم محبه
O you who torment the body of your lover with fire
أبا حسن لئن كانت أجابت
O Abu Hasan, if your gifts had answered
تجاف عن العفاة ولا ترعهم
Turn away from the negligent ones and do not pasture them
ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلة
Oh, would that I knew if you will spend a night
لعمري لئن شرفتني بصنيعة
By my life, though you have honored me with a deed,
سلوا سيف ألحاظه الممتشق
Ask the sword that unveiled its edges,
سعدت بك الأقمار جارا فلتفز
The moons rejoiced when you became their neighbor, so be joyful
لله يوم سقانا اللهو والمطر
The day when leisure and rain quenched our thirst
أما وعتاق العيس لو وجدت وجدي
Were the collar of 'Ees to find my ecstasy
قلت للساقي وقد طاف بها
I said to the cupbearer as he carried around
أبا حسن أنت أهل الجميل
O Abu Hasan, you are a man of refinement,
يابن علي ما أضيعت على
O son of Ali, no favor has been wasted
كنت أدعوك في مداواة حالي
I used to call upon you to cure my state
أما أبو اليمن فلتفخر به اليمن
Abu Al-Yumn, let Yemen boast of him,
طربت وما كان ذاك الطرب
I was disturbed, but not by folly in the moon, or a mirage in the haze,
نبي العلى والندى ما لي صفت وضفت
O Prophet of glory and dew, my qualities have withdrawn and departed
أيا ناهض الملك أي الثناء
O you who have assumed power, which praise
ألا من مبلغ عني عليا
O you who can send word to Ali
وإني للزمان لذو نضال
I am one who struggles with fate,
وكنت إذا ما رابني الدهر مرة
Whenever fate troubled me time and again,
لقد أصبحت نعماك عندي مشيدة
Your blessings have become monuments for me
خليلي إن لم تسعدا فذارني
My two beloveds, if you don't make me happy, leave me alone
يا فرحة البيت العتيق إذا
O joy of the ancient house when
لقد غال نبلك يا نابل
Your nobility is sublime, O noble one,
أقول لدهر ضامني بعد عزة
I say to fate that stripped me of glory
ما طلعت شمس من المغرب
No sun has risen from the west
أبلغ أبا الفضل الذي شهدت
Tell Abul Fadl, whose excellence
أترى أبصره مثلي القدح
Do you see him as I see the wine cup
أسعد الله بالمسير وأعطى
May God bless this journey, and grant
أبا الفضل كيف تناسيتني
O Abu al-Fadl, how could you forget me
ويوم أخذنا به فرصة
One day, we seized an opportunity
جرى النهر من شوق إلى ما حل الثرى
The river flowed yearning towards the resting place of the ground
أليس من العجائب أن مثلي
Is it not strange that one like me
لنا مجلس ما فيه للهم مدخل
We have a gathering where worries find no entrance,
نشدتك لا تعدم الراح راحا
I implore you, do not deny the wind its breeze,
أمد الله ظلك يا سعيد
May God prolong your shade, O Sa'eed
دعاني الأمير فلبيته
The prince summoned me, so I obeyed
قد توالت علي منك أيادي
Your generous hands have bestowed on me
أمن الملك حسبك من أمين
Are you content with kingship, O trusted one,
يا حسنها صفراء ذات تلهب
O beautiful blonde, passionately ablaze
رأيتك لما شمت برقك خلبا
I saw you when I sensed your flashing lightning
لنا كل يوم هناء جديد
Every day we have new joy,
أخلاقه أحلى من الأمن
His morals are sweeter than safety
يا دهر قد عديت عنك طلابي
O Time, I have turned away from seeking you,
ايا ما أحسن المنثور
O how beautiful is poetry,
محا الدهر آثار الكرام فلم يدع
Time has erased the traces of generosity, leaving behind
أمن الملك حسبك من أمين
Is kingship enough for you, O faithful one
مهلا بني الصوفي إنكم
Slow down, O mystics, for your pebbles
ليت الذي قلبي به مغرم
سأشكر ما مننت به ومثلي
بكيتك للبين قبل الحمام
أو ما ترى قلق الغدير كأنما
أيا بين ما سلطت إلا على ظلمي
متى أنا طاعن قلب الفجاج
خذا من صبا نجد أمانا لقلبه
متى ارتجعت مواهبها الكرام
شرفا لمجدك بانيا ومقوضا
هو الرسم لو أغنى الوقوف على الرسم
أظن الدهر جاءك مستثيرا
بنفسي من تضيء به الدياجي
ما لأبي اليمن علينا يد
لك الخير قد أنحى علي زماني
يا سيد الحكام هل من وقفة
أمني النفس وصلا من سعاد
أحتى إلى العلياء يا خطب تطمح
إذا ما ارتاح للراح الندامى
يا موقد النار الذي لم يأل في
ألا يا محرقي بالنار مهلا
أمعذبي بالنار سل بجوانحي
يا ليت أن يدي شلت ولم يرني
تحراني الزمان بكل خطب
صرت بين الصادين يا بن المجلي
تغيرتم عن عهدكم آل كامل
سقاني بعينيه شبه التي
كم سما لي بحسن رأيك جد
أطاعك فيما تروم القدر
بقاؤك أوفى اقتراح الأماني
ثمر كأن به الذي
أراني من روعات بينك نازلا
ما على العذال من سقمي
أسوم الجباب فلا خزها
مليت بدرا تهناه وضرغاما
عشت للمجد أطول الأعمار
مولاي تصبر عن أديبك
كم توالت يا سعيد بن علي
عسى باخل بلقاء يجود
