1. When my soul is too weak to reach your love,
It is easy for destiny to subdue it.
١. إِذا عَزَّ نَفْسِي عَنْ هَواكَ قُصُورُها
فَمِثْلُ النَّوى يَقْضِي عَلَيَّ يَسِيرُها
2. Does separation leave anything but desolation
For a soul made uneasy by the slightest distress?
٢. وَهَلْ غادَرَ الهِجْرانُ إِلاّ حُشاشَةً
لِنَفْسٍ بأَدْنى لَوْعَةٍ يَسْتَطِيرُها
3. Passion and destiny - patience is despised in both.
Suffice it that a state that angers the patient exists.
٣. هَوىً وَنَوىً يُسْتَقْبَحُ الصَّبْرُ فِيهِما
وَحَسْبُكَ مِنْ حالٍ يُذَمُّ صَبُورُها
4. I had hoped that my love would be steadfast
And that you would protect it from the tyranny of separation.
٤. وَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرْجُو أَنْ تَماسَكَ مُهْجَتِي
وَأَنَّكَ مِنْ جَوْرِ الْفِراقِ مُجِيرُها
5. But it was only an illusion, what I hoped for.
Beware, the worst that ruins souls is delusion.
٥. فَما كانَ إِلاَّ غِرَّةً ما رَجَوْتُهُ
أَلا شَرُّ ما أَرْدى النُّفُوسَ غُرُورُها
6. I am bound by passion while unity brings me together.
So how can I leave when the departure time comes?
٦. وإِنِّي لَرَهْنُ الشَّوْقِ وَالشَّمْلُ جامِعٌ
فَكَيْفَ إِذا حَثَّ الْحُداةَ مَسِيرُها
7. I have not stopped crying since the captivity of estrangement.
Who will be there for me on the morn after separation once I am captive?
٧. وَما زِلْتُ مِنْ أَسْرِ الْقَطِيعَةِ باكِياً
فَمَنْ لِي غَداةَ الْبَيْنِ أَنِّي أَسِيرُها
8. I thought the rejection was temporary
And that its perfection would come with the night.
٨. وَكُنْتُ أَرى أَنَّ الصُّدودَ مَنِيَّةٌ
يَكُونُ مَعَ اللَّيْلِ التَّمامِ حُضُورُها
9. But when separation by distance decreed between us,
I found the nights to be bittersweet.
٩. فَلَمّا قضَى التَّفْرِيقُ بِالْبُعْدِ بَيْنَنا
وَجَدْتُ اللَّيالِي كَانَ حُلْواً مَرِيرُها
10. I count it my joy to see you delighted
And the most blissful thing for a soul is its joy.
١٠. أَعُدُّ سُرُورِي أَنْ أَراكَ بِغِبْطَةٍ
وَأَنْفَسُ ما يُهْدِي لِنَفْسٍ سُرُورُها
11. It is enough of sorrow that I spend my nights tortured
By fires of worries whose blaze does not diminish.
١١. كَفى حَزَناً أَنِّي أَبِيتُ مُعَذَّباً
بِنارِ هُمُومٍ لَيْسَ يَخْبُو سَعِيرُها
12. That while my enemy does not care, I spend my nights
Burning with passion while he is cold.
١٢. وَأَنَّ عَدُوِّي لا يُراعُ وَأَنَّنِي
أَبِيتُ سَخِينَ الْعَيْنِ وَهْوَ قَرِيرُها
13. Souls detest the frequent bitterness of their lives
And abhor it even if it becomes chronic.
١٣. تَعافُ النُّفُوسَ الْمُرَّ مِنْ وِرْدِ عَيْشِها
وَتَكْرَهُ حَتّى يَسْتَمِرَّ مَرِيرُها
14. By the concurring rhymes, when passions rise
High with the judgment of reproach among the generous, their bridled horses shy.
١٤. وَلا والْقَوافِي السّائِراتِ إِذا غَلَتْ
بِحُكْمِ النَّدى عِنْدَ الْكِرامِ مُهُورُها
15. If I - may his protection defend me
And diminish the harm of enemies reviling me -
١٥. لَئِنْ أَنا لَمْ يَمْنَعْ حِمايَ انْتِصارُها
وَيَثْنِي أَذى الْعادِينَ عَنِّي نَكِيرُها
16. Did not live a day happily shaded
Or spend a night pleasantly intimate.
١٦. فَلا ظَلَّ يُوْماً مُصْحِباً لِي أَبِيُّها
وَلا باتَ لَيْلاً آنِساً بِي نَفُورُها
17. I severed lifetimes without knowing pleasure
Or the heedlessness of life, however it passed.
١٧. قَطَعْتُ صُدُورَ الْعُمْرِ لَمْ أَدْرِ لَذَّةً
وَغَفْلَةَ عَيْشٍ كَيْفَ كَانَ مُرُورُها
18. And when fate cast me aside, I sought refuge in a state
Whose shining leader makes calamities recoil.
١٨. وَلَمّا رَمانِي الدَّهْرُ عُذْتُ بِدَوْلَةٍ
جَلا الْحادِثاتِ الْفادِحاتِ مُنِيرُها
19. How can the days fear fate when the Lord of praise
Tomorrow, the Victorious' generosity is its aid?
١٩. وَكَيْفَ يَخافُ الدَّهْرُ رَبُّ مَحامِدٍ
غَدا كَرَمُ الْمَنْصُورِ وَهْوَ نَصِيرُها
20. I mounted wonders through the arm of the kingdom
Forbidden to all but me is scaling them.
٢٠. إِلى عَضُدِ الْمُلْكِ امْتطَيْتُ غَرائِباً
مُحَرَّمَةٌ إِلاّ عَلّي ظُهُورُها
21. To a king whose severity makes kings revere
And pride's day falls short of his superiority.
٢١. ِإلى مَلِكٍ تَعْنُو الْمُلُوكُ لِبَأْسِهِ
ويَقْصُرُ يَوْمَ الْفَخْرِ عَنْهُ فَخُورُها
22. The most generous with rain when the living withhold it
And the most willing when steeds are bloodied in battle.
٢٢. أَعَمُّهُمُ غَيْثاً إِذا بَخِلَ الْحيَا
وَأَطْعَنُهُمْ وَالْخَيْلُ تُدْمى نُحُورُها
23. Where benevolence easily meets his pursuits
And needs find mild his harshness.
٢٣. إِلى حَيْثُ تَلْقى الْجُودَ هَيْناً مَرامُهُ
لِباغِيهِ وَالْحاجاتِ سَهْلاً عَسِيرُها
24. With a king whose virtues never cease flowing
Whose fresh springs pour clear and murmuring streams.
٢٤. لَدى مَلِكٍ ما انْفَكَّ مِنْ مَكْرُماتِهِ
مَوارِدُ يَصْفُو عَذْبُها وَنَمِيرُها
25. Whose loftiness increases however long the outpour
And whose abundance grows however abundant the downpour.
٢٥. يَزِيدُ عَلَى غُوْلِ الطُّرُوقِ صَفاؤُها
وَيَنْمِي عَلَى طُولِ الْوُرُودِ غَزِيرُها
26. I would think it more wondrous if the sun's orb
Were delighted by his splendor and its light unextinguished.
٢٦. أَغَرُّ لَوَ أَنَّ الشَّمْسَ يَحْظَى جَبِينُها
بِبَهْجَتِهِ ما كَانَ يُكْسَفُ نُورُها
27. Wealthy in every merit and fortune
Yet, in any equal, needy of them.
٢٧. غَنِيٌّ الْعُلى مِنْ كُلِّ فَضْلٍ وَسُؤْدَدٍ
وَلكِنَّهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مِثْلٍ فَقِيرُها
28. Deeming deaths palatable however bitter
And gifts ample however plentiful.
٢٨. يُعُدُّ الْمَنايا مُسْتَساغاً كَرِيههُا
وَبِيضَ الْعَطايا مُسْتَقَلاًّ كَثِيرُها
29. God watered the days of the Supported one - no shower
Of pouring rainclouds pouring omitted to water it.
٢٩. سَقى اللهُ أَيّامَ الْمُؤَيَّدِ ما سَقَتْ
حَوافِلُ مُزْنٍ لا يُغِبُّ مَطِيرُها
30. So neither bare desert wandering nor bracelet blazing
Moved alike nor circled its plains.
٣٠. فَما نَقَلَتْ جَرْداءُ سابِحَةٌ لَهُ
شَبِيهاً وَلا وَجْناءُ يَقْلَقُ كُورُها
31. He quenched the land with justice until its gift
Became a breeze making even its warmth cool.
٣١. سَقى لهذِه الدُّنْيا مِنَ الْعَدْلِ رَيَّها
فَأَصْبَحَ لا يَخْشَى الذَّواءَ نَضِيرُها
32. Pardoning - after pardon I saw no felon's
Crime insignificant or grave before forgiveness.
٣٢. وَهَبَّ لَهُ فِيها نَسِيمُ غَضارَةٍ
مِنَ الْعَيْشِ حَتّى عادَ بَرْداً هَجِيرُها
33. With opinion and might he undertook
To reveal to his enemies the onslaughts that devastate them.
٣٣. عَفُوٌّ فَما عايَنْتُ زَلَّةَ مُجْرِمٍ
لَدى عَفْوِهِ إِلاّ صَغِيراً كَبِيرُها
34. Swords of strategy and conquest continuously
Sheathed at his waist and bared.
٣٤. لَهُ الرَّأْيُ وَالْبَأسُ اللَّذانِ تَكَفَّلا
لأَعْدائِهِ أَوْحى حِمامٍ يُبِيرُها
35. He saw the land of Tyre a prize to a conqueror
Assailing it daily and raiding nightly.
٣٥. سُيُوفٌ مِنَ التَّدْبِيرَ والْفَتْكِ لَمْ يَزَلْ
وَمُغْمَدُها فِي كَفِّهِ وَشَهِيرُها
36. He reclaimed it and victory resides in the heart of his sword -
A brother of might who does not fear its loosening.
٣٦. رَأَى أَرْضَ صُورٍ نُهْبَةً لِمُغالِبٍ
يُنازِلُها يَوْماً وَيَوْماً يُغِيرُها
37. Ambitions - when war befalls a land,
Its moats are the limit of swords and its walls.
٣٧. تداركها والنصر في صدر سيفه
أخو عز مات لا يخاف فتورها
38. And a destinied blade that does not turn from havoc
Unless it shatters in the chest what subdues it.
٣٨. هُمامٌ إِذا ما حَلَّ يَوْماً بِبَلْدَةٍ
فَخَنْدَقُها حَدُّ الْحُسام وَسُورُها
39. I see the princes as the epitome of pride
While you, when the proud are counted, are its prince.
٣٩. وَسُمْرٌ مِنَ الْخَطِّيِّ لا تَرِدُ الْوَغى
فَتُحْطَمَ إِلاّ فِي الصُّدُورِ صُدُورُها
40. You continued to rise to the heights with resolve
Making the world too narrow no matter its breadth.
٤٠. أَرى أُمَراءِ الْمُلْكِ لِلْفَخْرِ غايَةً
وَأَنْتَ إِذا عُدَّ الْفَخارُ أَمِيرُها
41. I swear, if you attempted your destiny in sublime elevation,
The heavens would not prefer their spheres to you.
٤١. وَما زِلْتَ تسْمُو لِلْعَلاءِ بِهِمَّةٍ
تَقِلُّ لَكَ الدُّنْيا بِها كيْفَ صُورُها
42. With your sword, you empowered lands you fortified
And like them your equal prospered.
٤٢. وَأَقْسِمُ لَوْ حاوَلْتَ قَدْرَكَ فِي الْعُلى
لَما آثَرَتْ عَنْكَ السَّماءَ بُدُورُها
43. Happy the possessions relying upon you
And proud the days fateful to you.
٤٣. وَإِنَّ بِلاداً أَنْتَ حائِطُ ثَغْرِها
بِسَيْفِكَ قَدْ عَزَّتْ وَعَزَّ نَظِيرُها
44. Your praise perfumed the world folding
The stagnance of its musk and fragrance within it.
٤٤. فَسَعْداً لأَمْلاكٍ عَلَيْكَ اعْتمِادُها
وَفَخْراً لأيّامٍ إِلَيْكَ مَصِيرُها
45. The lands and its people wandered in your memory
And the morning and evening breezes raved in your winds.
٤٥. لَقَدْ عَطَّرَ الدُّنْيا ثَناؤُكَ فَانْثَنى
بِهِ ذا كَسادٍ مِسْكُها وَعَبِيرُها
46. You filled the horizons with sweetness whenever ambitions
To spread it stirred the tranquil and grave.
٤٦. فَتاهَتْ بِذِكْراهُ الْبِلادُ وَأَهُلُها
وَهَبَّتْ بِرَيّاهُ الصِّبا وَدَبُورُها
47. So I came to you with a soul fettered by yearning
And dreams of you had nearly released it.
٤٧. مَلأْتَ بِهِ الآفاقَ طِيباً مَتى دَعا
إِلى نَشْرِهِ الآَمالَ خَفَّ وَقُورُها
48. I air my grievances hoping
In your gracious care it will find life again.
٤٨. فَجِئتُكَ ذا نَفْسٍ يُقَيِّدُها الْجَوى
وَقَدْ كادَ حُسْنُ الظَّنِّ فِيكَ يُطِيرُها
49. I do not doubt that the conclusion of this period
Will be as auspicious as its beginning with you.
٤٩. رَمِيمٍ أُزَجِّيها إِلَيْكَ لَعَلَّهُ
يَكُونُ بِنُعْمى راحَتَيْكَ نُشُورُها
٥٠. وَلَسْتُ بِشاكٍ مُدَّةَ الْخَطْبِ بَعْدَها
وَأَوَّلُ إِفْضائِي إِلَيْكَ أَخِيرُها
