1. It is the abode, so roam in its near traces
If going around a home consoles you
١. هِيَ الدِّيارُ فَعُجْ فِي رَسْمِها الْعارِي
إِنْ كانَ يُغْنِكَ تَعْرِيجٌ عَلَى دارِ
2. If your gaze misses its dwellers, then it is there
What fills the heart with longing and reminiscence
٢. إِنْ يَخْلُ طَرْفُكَ مِنْ سُكَانِها فَبِها
ما يَمْلأُ الْقَلْبَ مِنْ شَوْقٍ وَتَذْكارِ
3. O Amr, no standing in the traces of a residence
Whose erased traces aroused your longing in it
٣. يا عُمْرُو ما وَقْفَةٌ فِي رَسْمِ مَنْزِلَةٍ
أَثارَ شَوْقَكَ فِيها مَحْوُ آثارِ
4. You denied love there, then acknowledged it
And your acknowledgement is none but your flowing tears
٤. أَنْكَرْتَ فِيها الْهَوى ثُمَّ اعْتَرَفْتَ بِهِ
وَما اعْتِرافُكَ إلاّ دَمْعُكَ الْجارِي
5. The abode complains while no brother complains
Of love like an abode in destitution
٥. تَشْجُو الدِّيارُ وَما يَشْجُو أَخا كَمَدٍ
مِنَ الْهَوى مِثْلُ دارٍ ذاتِ إفْقارِ
6. How good a home at the foot of a hill
And a shelter of withered palm leaves and 'tishar'
٦. يا حَبَّذا مَنْزِلٌ بالسَّفِحِ مِنْ إِضَمٍ
وَدِمْنَةٌ بِلوى خَبْتٍ وَتعِشْارِ
7. And good a root where the tail of the breeze at night
Drags on a fragrant place to sleep
٧. وَحَبَّذا أُصُلٌ يُمْسِي يَجَرُّ بِها
ذَيْلُ النَّسِيمِ عَلَى مَيْثاءِ مَعْطارِ
8. If I had forgotten a past time from its antiquity
I would have forgotten my perfumes and camels
٨. لُوْ كُنْتُ ناسِيَ عَهْدٍ مِنْ تَقادُمِهِ
نَسِيتُ فِيها لُباناتِي وَأَوْطارِي
9. Days in which a lion attacks unexpectedly
The physician of shyness in the raging forest
٩. أَيّامَ يَفْتِكُ فِيها غَيْرَ مُرْتَقَبٍ
طَبْيُ الْكِناسِ بِلَيْثِ الْغابَةِ الضّارِي
10. It pounces on me while every lone one
Allures me with amiability from inhabitant and neighbour
١٠. يَصْبُو إِليَّ وَيُصْبِي كُلِّ مُنْفَرِدٍ
بِالدَّلِّ وَالْحُسْنِ مِنْ بادٍ وَمِنْ قارِ
11. I do not glance except it falls
On shining suns and moons
١١. لا أُرْسِلُ اللَّحْظَ إلاّ كانَ مَوْقِعُهُ
عَلَى شُمُوسٍ مُنِيراتٍ وَأَقْمارِ
12. How good living if I attained it
With youth and eternal time without treachery
١٢. ما أَطْيَبَ الْعَيْشَ لَوْ أَنِّي وَفَدْتُ بِهِ
عَلَى شَبابٍ وَدَهْرٍ غَيْرِ غَدّارِ
13. Now, my soul has shunned its temptations
And the time has come after the arrival of old age to shorten myself
١٣. اَلآنَ قَدْ هَجَرَتْ نَفْسِي غَوايَتَها
وَحانَ بَعْدَ حُلُولِ الشِّيْبِ إِقْصارِي
14. And life is divided between companions in their time
Between enjoyment and bitterness
١٤. وَالْعَيْشُ ما صَحِبَ الْفِتْيانُ دَهْرَهُمُ
مُقَسَّمُ بَيْنَ إِحْلاءٍ وإِمْرارِ
15. O you at the meeting of the two coasts, if my winds blew at you
I have already apologized
١٥. يا مَنْ بِمُجْتُمُعِ الشَّطَّيْنِ إِنْ عَصَفَتْ
بِكُمْ رِياحِي فَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِعْذارِي
16. Do not deny my leaving your homelands
A noble man does not remain patient of injustice
١٦. لا تُنْكِرُنَّ رِحِيلِي عَنْ دِيارِكُمُ
لَيْسَ الْكَرِيمُ عَلَى ضَيْمِ بِصَبّارِ
17. Nobles refuse injustice for me, and I have not
Gifted poems and verses that are gifted
١٧. يَأْبى لِيَ الضَّيْمَ فُرْسانُ الْخِلاجِ وَما
حَبَّرْتُ مِنْ غُرَرٍ تُهْدى وَأَشْعارِ
18. I have set out at dawn with the honour of religion taking refuge
Indeed the generous are supporters against days
١٨. وَقَدْ غَدَوْتُ بِعِزِّ الدِّينِ مُعْتَصِماً
إِنَّ الْكِرامَ عَلَى الأَيّامِ أَنْصارِي
19. A kingdom, if its gifts are mentioned one day
Hope becomes richer through it after scarcity
١٩. مَلْكٌ إِذا ذُكِرَتْ يُوْماً مَواهِبُهُ
أَثْرى الرَّجاءُ بِها مِنْ بَعْدِ إِقْتارِ
20. It gives you generosity over stinginess you reckon
It compensated you from sharpness, gathering, and abundance
٢٠. يُعْطِيكَ جُوداً عَلَى الإِقْلال تَحْسَبُهُ
وافاكَ عَنْ نَشَبٍ جَمٍّ وَإِكْثارِ
21. A gushing rain from generosity, filled with resolve
As if it is the sword between water and fire
٢١. رَيّانُ مِنْ كَرَمٍ مَلآنُ مِنْ هِمَمٍ
كَأَنَّهُ السَّيْفُ بَيْنَ الْماءِ وَالنّارِ
22. The one who strikes the deep, blazing stab
Its striker bounces off it with recoil
٢٢. لَيْسَ الْجَوادُ جُواداً ما جَرى مَثَلٌ
حَتّى يَكُونَ كَحَسّانِ بْنِ مِسْمارِ
23. It almost penetrates when he penetrates it
Were it not for the froth of pouring blood from its intensity
٢٣. الْواهِبُ الْخَيْل إِمّا جِئْتَ زائِرَهُ
أَقَلَّ سَرْجَكَ مِنْها كُلُّ طَيّارِ
24. It meets the spears and the coats of mail, you reckon
There is no straying arrowheads in it and no swords
٢٤. اَلطّاعِنُ الطَّعْنَةَ الْفَوْهاءَ جائِشَةً
تَرُدُّ طاعِنَها عَنْها بِتَيارِ
25. In his hand Mismaar's sword which brought misery
To the aspirations of kings in the days of Sinjar
٢٥. يَكادُ يَنْفُذُ فِيها حِينَ يُنْفِذُها
لُوْلا عُبابُ دَمٍ مِنْ فُوْرِها جارِ
26. The charger hopes for sustenance only from its blows
The horse of determination with fangs and claws
٢٦. تَلْقى السِّنانَ بِها وَالسَّرْدَ تَحْسَبُهُ
ما ضَلَّ منْ فُتُلٍ فِيها وَمِسْبارِ
27. Good the climate for dishevelment, loss of possessions
Blinking vision, long journey
٢٧. فِي كَفِّهِ سَيْفُ مِسْمارَ الَّذِي شَقِيَتْ
هامُ الْمُلُوكِ بِهِ أَيّامَ سِنْجارِ
28. They do not complain to it of high prices in a year
In which the destitute and the reader complain
٢٨. لاَ يَأْمُلُ الرّزْقَ إلاّ مِنْ مَضارِبِهِ
فَرْسُ الْهُمامِ بِأَنْيابٍ وَأَظْفارِ
29. A cloud of generosity pouring on the hopeful
And a sea of generosity frothing on the satisfied
٢٩. نِعْمَ الْمُناخُ لِشُعْثٍ فَوْتِ مَهْلَكَةٍ
أَرْماقِ مَسْغَبَةٍ أنْضاءِ أَسْفارِ
30. When it traveled from a house, it left for it
From industries the best effects
٣٠. لا يَشْتَكُونَ لَدَيْهِ الْمَحْلَ فِي سَنَةٍ
يَشْكُو بِها السَّغَبَ الْمَقْرِيُّ وَالقَارِي
31. Like rain it left praised and left what
Satisfies you of fresh blossoms and lights
٣١. سَحابُ جُوْدٍ عَلَى الرّاجِينَ مُنْهَمِلٍ
وَبَحْرُ جُودٍ عَلَى الْعافِينَ زَخّارِ
32. The treasures remain from the surpluses of its obtainer
As if they are betrayals after rain
٣٢. إذا تَرَحَّلَ عَنْ دارٍ أَقامَ لَهُ
مِنَ الصَّنائِعِ فِيها خَيْرُ آثارِ
33. He of victorious resolve, nothing makes him swerve
His opinions between deduction and enacting
٣٣. كَالْغَيْثِ أَقْلَعَ مَحْمُوداً وَخَلَّفَ ما
يُرْضِيكَ مِنْ زَهَرٍ غَضٍّ وَنُوّارِ
34. Elevated to the prohibited nobility, his side
Asleep to the lineage free of shame
٣٤. تَبْقى الذَّخائِرُ مِنْ فَضْلاتِ نائِلِهِ
كَأَنَّها غُدُرٌ مِنْ بَعْدِ أَمْطارِ
35. Entrusted in an immaculate side that comes to a kingdom
By him they were honored and every tyrant humiliated
٣٥. مُظَفَّرُ الْعَزْمِ ما تَأْلُو مُوَفَّقَةً
آراؤُهُ بَيْنَ إِيْرادٍ وَإِصْدارِ
36. Days a dog which between Jawsiya
And Gaza from farms and towns
٣٦. سامٍ إلى الشَّرَفِ الْممْنُوعِ جانِبُهُ
نامٍ إِلى الْحَسَبِ الْعَارِي مِنَ الْعارِ
37. It leads it by the resolve of flaming determination
Before it like the fangs of the flooding torrent
٣٧. مُخَوَّلٌ فِي جَنابٍ يَيْتَ مَمْلَكَةٍ
عَزُّوا بِهِ وَأَذَلُّوا كُلَّ جَبّارِ
38. It shoots in every darkness with its eyes
From it to a planet with happy rising
٣٨. أَيّامَ كَلْبٌ لَها ما بَيْنَ جُوسِيَةٍ
وَبَيْنَ غَزَّةَ مِنْ رِيفٍ وَأَمْصارِ
39. Every heavy lance carrier sleeps
In the saddle of every light armor swift
٣٩. يَقُودُها مِنْ سِنانٍ عَزْمُ مُتَّقِدٍ
أَمامَها كَسِنانِ الصَّعْدَةِ الْوارِي
40. Glory that appeared in Najd, its early parts
And the fresh torrent built it in the Levant
٤٠. تَرْمِي بأَعُيُنِها فِي كُلِّ داجِيةٍ
مِنْهُ إلى كَوْكَبٍ بِالسَّعْدِ سَيّارِ
41. O son of the most honorable nobles, their glory has not ceased
Inclining with the scarcity of peers and onlookers
٤١. يَبِيتُ كلُّ ثَقِيلِ الرُّمْحِ حامِلُه
فِي سَرْجِ كُلِّ خَفِيفِ اللِّبْدِ مِغْوارِ
42. The preventers of fear on the next morn, their neighbour
And the keepers absent the sanctity of a neighbour
٤٢. مُجْدٌ تَأَثَّلَ فِي نَجْدٍ أَوائِلُهُ
وَشِيد بِالشّامِ مِنْهُ الطّارِفُ الطّارِي
43. White pure, clouds when they give
Generosity, and they are not clouds when counted
٤٣. يَا بْنَ الْكرِامِ الأُلى ما زالَ مَجْدُهُمُ
مُغْرىً بِقِلَّةِ أشْباهٍ وَأَنْظارِ
44. Time does not accompany any but praise of them
And good accounts when they are mentioned
٤٤. اَلْمانِعِينَ غَداةَ الْخَوْفِ جارهُمُ
وَالْحافِظِينَ بِغَيْبٍ حُرْمَةَ الْجَارِ
45. The clans of the living people of Yemen
When they rebelled against you, they transgressed
٤٥. بِيضُ الْعَوارِفِ أَغْمارٌ إِذا وَهَبُوا
جُوداً وَلَيْسُوا إِذا عُدُّوا بِأَغْمارِ
46. You became barren when their flood extended
And the lion is not feared without barrenness
٤٦. لا يَصْحَبُ الدَّهْرُ مِنْهُمْ طُولَ ما ذُكِرُوا
إِلاّ الثَّناءُ وَإلاّ طِيبُ أَخْبارِ
47. They advanced so a rain whose drops I poured drowned them
Not every route takes horses of thick neck
٤٧. إِنَّ الْعَشائِرَ مِنْ أَحْياءِ ذِي يَمَنٍ
لَمّا بَغَوْكَ جَرَوْا فِي غَيْرِ مِضْمارِ
48. They inclined so each of their onlookers
A stab that straightens each neighbour
٤٨. أَصْحَرْتَ إِذْ مَدَّ بِالْمِدّانِ سَيْلُهُمُ
وَاللَّيْثُ لا يُتَّقى مِنْ غَيْرِ إِصْحارِ
49. Until when the first ended they did not benefit
From prohibition while rebellion in them is the worst blind passion
٤٩. سالُوا فَأَغْرَقَهُمْ قطر نضحت به
ما كل سبل على خيل بجرار
50. You unleashed it and defended the Levant believing
That only every harmful one benefits
٥٠. مالوا فقوم منهم كل مناظر
طَعْنٌ يُعَدِّلُ مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ جُوّارِ
51. Time has bent you times with others
So it remained winking a stick not submissive
٥١. حَتّى إِذا نَهَتِ الأُولى فَما انْتَفَعُوا
بِالنَّهْي وَالْبَغْيُ فِيهِمْ شَرُّ أَمّارِ
52. And how often it refused the vengeance of people of grudge
And has never spent the night against a people avenging
٥٢. أَبَحْتَها وَحَمَيْتَ الشّامَ معْتقِداً
أَنْ لَيْسَ يَنْفَعُ إِلاّ كُلُّ ضَرّارِ
53. If I visit your house longing, your glory leads me
Not every longing one is a visitor
٥٣. قَدْ نابَكَ الدَّهْرُ أَزْماناً بِغَيْرِهِمِ
فَظَلَّ يَغْمِزُ عُوداً غَيْرَ خُوّارِ
54. The capable are not those who left
The duty of Hajj out of piety for the righteous
٥٤. وَكَمْ أَبَتَّ عَلَى ثَأْرٍ ذَوِي ضَغَنٍ
وَلَمْ تَبِتْ قَطُّ مِنْ قُوْمٍ عَلَى ثارِ
55. And I have come to you, so ready me for a time
In which the freeman does not drink but misfortune
٥٥. إِنْ زُرْتُ دارَكَ عنْ شَوْقٍ فَمَجْدُكَ بِي
أَوْلى وَما كُلُّ مُشْتاقٍ بِزَوّارِ
56. The tyrant assigns the freemen, aiming for them
As if he is among them seeking strings
٥٦. لَيْسَ الْمُطِيقُونَ حِجَّ الْبَيْتِ ما تَرَكُوا
فَرِيضَةَ الْحَجِّ عَنْ زُهْدٍ بِأَبْرارِ
57. Thanks most hoarded treasure attained by it
So take your share of my assistance and early mornings
٥٧. وَقَدْ أَتَيْتُكَ أَسْتَعْدِي عَلى زَمَنٍ
لا يَشْرَبُ الْحُرُّ فِيهِ غَيْرَ أَكْدارِ
58. Of the rhymes which I have continued to store
The unsteadiness of the journey of departure and travel
٥٨. مُوَكِّلُ الْجُوْرِ بِالأَحْرارِ يَقْصِدُهُمْ
كَأَنَّهُ عِنْدُهُمْ طَلاّبُ أَوْتارِ
59. Kindness, its beginning and end are
In the palm of every Yemeni, O son of Mismar
٥٩. وَالْحَمْدُ أَنْفَسُ مَذْخُورٍ تَفَوزُ بِهِ
فَخُذْ بِحظِّكَ مِنْ عُونِي وَأَبْكارِي
60. Do not quench me with other than the bounty of your hands, for none
Waters from the clouds except every pouring one
٦٠. مِنَ الْقَوافِي الَّتِي ما زِلْتُ أُودِعُها
عُلالَةَ الرَّكْبِ مِنْ غادٍ وَمِنْ سارِ
61. And I am not the first hopeful a hope has led
Many have attained from you the howdah camels
٦١. إِنَّ السِّماحَةَ َأُولاها وَآخِرَها
فِي كَفِّ كُلِّ يَمانٍ يَا بْنَ مِسْمارِ
٦٢. لا تَسْقِنِي بسِوى جَدْوى يَدَيْكَ فَما
يُرْوِي مِنَ السُّحْبِ إِلاّ كُلُّ مِدْرارِ
٦٣. وَلَسْتُ أَوَّلَ راج قادَهُ أَمَلٌ
قَدْ راحَ مِنْكَ عَلَى شَقْراءَ مِحْضارِ
