١. نَبِي الْعُلى وَالنَّدى ما لِي صَفَتْ وَضَفَتْ

And I have asked for your best compositions, so compose

٢. إِنِّي لَرَبُّ الْقَوافِي فِي زَمانِكُمُ
وَقَدْ سَأَلْتُ اقْتِراحَ الْقَوْمِ فاقْتَرِحُوا

3. A profound meaning and words that flow, thoughts that awaken
A meter not forced and what thought can barely stir

٣. مَعْنىً بَلِيغاً وَاَلْفاظاً يَرُقْنَ وَأَغْ
راضاً يَفُقْنَ وَبَحْراً لَيْسَ يُنْتَزَحُ

4. Except where amusement and wine cups turn
Look, faces of life appear joyous

٤. وَما يَكادُ يُدِيرُ الْفِكْرُ أَكْؤُسَهُ
إِلاّ بِحَيْثُ يَدُورُ اللُّهْوُ وَالْقَدَحُ

5. Adorning hope’s breast as it expands
Today the sun shows us its smiling face

٥. أَلا تَرَونَ وُجُوهَ الْعَيْشِ مُقْبِلَةً
تُزْهى وَصَدْرَ الأَمانِي وَهْوَ مُنْشَرِحُ

6. Then weeps tears of yearning as they pour
The flute is like a sigh in a lover’s heart and the strings

٦. وَالْيَوْمَ يَوْمٌ يُرِينا الشَّمْسَ ضاحِكَةً
طَوْراً وَدَمْعَ الْغَوادِي وَهْوَ مُنْسَفِحُ

7. In every ear have eloquent tongues
When a melody passes the listeners

٧. وَالنّايُ كَالنَّأْيِ في قَلْبِ المُحِبِّ وَلِلْ
أَوْتارِ فِي كُلِّ سَمْعٍ أَلْسُنٌ فُصُحُ

8. Their hearts are nearly torn with rapture
Do not blame the hedonists if they stray

٨. وَمُسْمِعِينَ إِذا مَرَّتْ لَهُمْ نَغَمٌ
كادَتْ لَهُنَّ قُلُوبُ القَوْمِ تَنْجَرِحُ

9. From it, corrupting what they did when upright
Among the heirs of glory, a prince in kings' crown

٩. لا تَعْذِرَنَّ بَنِي اللَّذّاتِ إِنْ نَزَعُوا
عَنْهَا فَأَفْسَدُ ما كانُوا إِذا صَلُحُوا

10. Embracing honor, fortunate and greeted by joy
Today my praise fortified after its humiliation

١٠. وَفِي ذُرى الْمَجْدِ مِنْ تاجِ الْمُلُوكِ فَتىً
بِالْعِزِّ مُغْتَبِقٌ بِالسَّعْدِ مُصْطَبِحُ

11. A kingdom which days and eulogies will boast
A king when he surges in valor and pours glory

١١. الْيَوْمَ حَصَّنَ مَدْحِي بَعْدَ بِذْلَتِهِ
مَلْكٌ بِهِ تَفْخَرُ الأَيّامُ وَالْمِدَحُ

12. The lion bewildered, the rain pouring
A full moon whose brightness matches the horizon’s moon

١٢. مَلْكٌ إِذا انْهَلَّ فِي بَأْسٍ وَفَيْضِ نَدىً
فَاللَّيْثُ مُهْتَصِرٌ والْغَيْثُ مُفْتَضِحُ

13. He makes the night like the dawning growing bright
Praise wanders not knowing its limits

١٣. بَدْرٌ لَوَانَّ لِبَدْرِ الأُفْقِ بَهْجَتَهُ
أَضْحى بِهِ اللَّيْلُ مِثْلَ الصُّبْحِ يَتَّضِحُ

14. Are his virtues white or his nature worshipful?
If he were not best of all people

١٤. حارَ الثُّناءُ فَما يَدْرِي أَغايَتُهُ
أَعْراقُهُ الْبِيضُ أَمْ أَخْلاقُهُ السُّجُح

15. I would say glory and dew are granted to him
As for time, his state has become verdant

١٥. لَوْ لَمْ تَكُنْ أَوْحَدَ الأَقْوامِ كُلِّهِمِ
لَقُلْتُ إِنَّ الْمَعالِي وَالنَّدى مِنَحُ

16. Depicting a garden, and students successful
Life is expansive, safety ahead

١٦. أَمّا الزَّمانُ فَقَدْ أَضْحى بِدَوْلَتِهِ
نَضْراً حَكى الرَّوْضَ وَالطُّلابُ قَدْ نَجَحُوا

17. Joy purified, worry discarded

١٧. وَالْعَيْشُ مُتَّسِعٌ وَالأَمْنُ مُقْتَبَلٌ
وَاللَّهْوُ مُسْتَخْلَصٌ والْهَمُّ مُطَّرَحُ
