1. Tell Abul Fadl, whose excellence
Both city and desert have witnessed,

2. With you there's no excuse for me
Though excuses for you I have furnished.

3. Is it proper in judgment of the noble
That I suffer while you're an ocean?

4. And my Sabbath from trysting's condition—
Habit of time wears a poor garment.

5. For me is a moon, were you to behold him
A day, by his beauty the moon would be darkened.

6. No, open-handedness his quality not,
Nor the lover knew bearing from his like.

7. In his nature a piercing, and naught to be seen
Save some joy and estrangement between.

8. Send us then wine, by which you'll make pliant
Perchance the unbending, by wine softened.

9. Drunkenness promises union with you,
And how oft has its promise held true!

10. Hasten some generous wine that thanksgiving
May meet with the beautiful, wage disappear.
