1. The vicissitudes of fate do not spare their victim,
And the abode of calamities does not comfort its afflicted.
١. صُرُوفُ الْمَنايا لَيْسَ يُودِي قَتِيلُها
وَدارُ الرَّزايا لا يَصِحُّ عَلِيلُها
2. I have met it with aversion, so I endured it,
As one endures the abode of humiliation when he dwells in it.
٢. مَنِيتُ بِها مُسْتَكْرَهاً فَاجْتويْتُها
كَما يَجْتَوِي دارَ الْهَوانِ نَزِيلُها
3. Knowing what it was has made death desirable to me,
And many a life whose length pleases you not.
٣. يُشَهِّي إِلَيَّ الْمَوْتَ عِلْمِي بِأَمْرِها
وَرُبَّ حَياةٍ لا يَسُرُّكَ طُولُها
4. The most troubled life is that whose souls are impure
When their minds and intellects are immoral.
٤. وَأَكْدَرُ ما كانَتْ حَياةُ نُفُوسِها
إِذا ما صَفَتْ أَذْهانُها وَعُقُولُها
5. And who is he that finds living pleasant after
Every soul has seen that this is its path?
٥. وَمَنْ ذا الّذِي يَحْلُو لهُ الْعَيْشُ بَعْدَما
رَأَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ أَنَّ هذا سَبِيلُها
6. Hold a mourning ceremony, for excellence has been bereaved of its family,
And the heights have sincerely lamented its departure.
٦. أَقِمْ مَأْتَماً قَدْ أُثْكِلَ الْفَضْلُ أَهْلَهُ
وَبَكّ الْمَعالِي قَدْ أَجَدَّ رَحِيلُها
7. If you task tears with carrying the sorrows
That have burdened you, their heavy load will be lightened.
٧. إِذا أَنْتَ كَلَّفْتَ المَدامِعَ حَمْلَ ما
عَناكَ مِنَ الأَحْزانِ خَفَّ ثَقِيلُها
8. And O you who cries for the lofty ones, your flowing tears
Will suffice to make happy the intimate friend who has saddened for them.
٨. وَيا باكِيَ الْعلْياءِ دُونَكَ عَبْرَةً
مَلِيّاً بِإِسْعادِ الْخَلِيلِ هُمُولها
9. The breast of a grieved love that disloyalty has deceived,
So that nothing remains but his anguish and suffering.
٩. وَمُهْجَةَ مَحْزُونٍ تَخَوَّنَها الضَّنا
فَلَمْ يَبْقَ إِلاّ وَجْدُها وَغَلِيلُها
10. Beware! With piety and good deeds, the separation
Of one whose mention and crying are prolonged, will be eased.
١٠. ألا بِالتُّقى وَالصّالِحاتِ مُفارِقٌ
طَوِيلٌ عَلَيْهِ بَثُّها وَعَوِيلُها
11. Calamity has stricken a dear soul, grievous is its affliction.
Noble are its qualities, few are its complaints.
١١. أَصابَ الرَّدى نَفْساً عَزِيزاً مُصابُها
كَرِيماً سَجاياها قَلِيلاً شُكُولُها
12. So I swore, death will never refuse to take him,
And will not be found elsewhere but in the noble.
١٢. فَأَقْسَمْتُ ما رامَتْ مَنِيعَ حِجابِها الْ
مَنُونُ وَفي غَيْرِ الْكِرامِ ذُحُولُها
13. The vengeance of time still lies with a people
Who pledge loyalty, believing in its illusions.
١٣. وَما زالَ ثَأْرُ الدَّهْرِ عِنْدَ مَعاشِرٍ
يَشِيمُ النَّدى أيْمانَهُمْ وَيُخِيلُها
14. Whose people repel him from glory,
Then the tribe of glory is his tribe.
١٤. فَمَنْ يَكُ مَدْفُوعاً عَنِ الْمَجْدِ قُوْمُهُ
فَإِنَّ قَبِيلَ الْمَكْرُماتِ قَبِيلُها
15. Whose actions are forgotten, he will be,
For ages, indebted to the fair mention that makes him immortal.
١٥. وَمَنْ يَكُ مَنْسِيَّ الْفِعالِ فَإِنَّهُ
مَدى الدَّهْرِ بِالذِّكْرِ الْجَمِيلِ كَفِيلُها
16. The winds blow gently according to the amount of corruption,
And the good branches grow more virtuous from their roots.
١٦. يَطِيبُ بِقَدْرِ الْفائِحاتِ نَسِيمُها
وَتَزْكُو الْفُرُوعُ الطَّيِّباتُ أُصُولُها
17. A cloud of righteousness, now dispersing,
And a sign of glory, now fading.
١٧. سَحابَةُ بِرٍّ آنَ مِنْها انْقِشاعُها
وَأَيْكَةُ مَجْدٍ حانَ مِنْها ذُبُولُها
18. I wish it rain clouds to water it, and if so,
Its torrents would flow towards the clouds.
١٨. أَوَدُّ لَها سُقْيا الْغَمامِ وَلَوْ أَشا
إِذاً كَشَفتْ صَوْبَ الْغَمامِ سُيُولُها
19. How can I revive one who resides in eternity with life
That was not hoarded for him but as provision?
١٩. وَكَيْفَ أُحَيِّي ساكِنَ الْخُلْدِ بِالْحَيا
وَما ذُخِرَتْ إلاّ لَهُ سَلْسَبِيلُها
20. He will enjoy an abode of reckoning,
And rest in the shade of gardens for his lodging.
٢٠. سَيشْرُفُ فِي دارِ الْحِسابِ مَقامُها
وَيَبْرُدُ فِي ظلِّ الْجِنانِ مَقِيلُها
21. We seek recourse in the causes of solace, and yet
In the judgment of loyalty, it is ugly.
٢١. نَلُوذُ بِأَسْبابِ الْعَزاءِ وَإِنَّهُ
لَيَقْبُحُ فِي حُكْمِ الْوَفاءِ جَمِيلُها
22. Can the blamer benefit from prolonging his reproach
Against fate? And the days ahead are difficult, winding paths.
٢٢. وَهَلْ يَنْفَعُ الْمَرْزِيَّ أَنْ طالَ عَتْبُهُ
عَلَى الدَّهْرِ وَالأَيّامُ صَعْبٌ ذَلُولُها
23. So let not sorrow break your heart beyond them,
For with their loss, their consequences have perished.
٢٣. فَلا يَثْلِمَنَّ الْحُزْنُ قَلْبَكَ بَعْدَها
فَقِدْماً أَبادَ الْمُرْهَفاتِ فُلُولُها
24. What could a speaker bring you
When you are resolute in your generosity, a doer of noble deeds.
٢٤. وَماذا الَّذِي يَأْتِي بِهِ لَكَ قائلٌ
وَأَنْتَ قَؤُولُ الْمَكْرُماتِ فَعُولُها
25. When the son of Ali one day, with his resolve,
Marched to meet the battles of time, its heavy burdens shook.
٢٥. إِذا ابْنُ عَلِيٍّ رامَ يَوْماً بَحِزْمِهِ
لِقاءَ خُطُوبِ الدَّهْرِ دَقَّ جَلِيلُها
26. You have always been full of determination
That shortens the days of adversity and prolongs them.
٢٦. وَما زِلْتَ مَمْلُوءًا مِنَ الْهِمَمِ الَّتي
تُقَصِّرُ أَيّامَ الرَّدى وَتُطِيلُها
27. Reaching the distant horizon of glory, its study fulfills it,
And in the present time, accomplishes its journey.
٢٧. يَنالُ مَدى الْمَجْدِ الْبَعِيدِ رَذِيُّها
وَيَقْطَعُ فِي حَدِّ الزَّمانِ كَلِيلُها
28. You have lost, but have not lost your dignity, surely
It is the ignorant who waste well-known matters.
٢٨. فَقَدْتَ فَلَمْ تَفْقَدْ عَزاكَ وَإِنَّما
يُضَيِّعُ مَأْثُورَ الأُمُورِ جَهُولُها
29. Moreover, the one you parted with yesterday cannot fully repay
A torrent of tears that flowing for his right.
٢٩. عَلَى أَنَّ مَنْ فارَقْتَ بِالأَمْسِ لا تَفِي
بِحَقٍّ لَهُ أغْزارُ دَمْعٍ تُسِيلُها
30. Blameworthy is not its mourning, that his affliction
Does not cut deeply into religion and the world you represent.
٣٠. وَما عُذْرُها أَنْ لا يَشُقَّ مُصابُها
عَلَى الدِّينِ وَالدُّنْيا وَأَنْتَ سَلِيلُها
