ألا ليت أنفاس الرياح النواسم
Alas! If only the gentle breezes
قل لمسرى الريح من إضم
Tell the wind's passage from Idm
يممت من علياك خير ميمم
I sought asylum in the best sanctuary, from your heights
أما وخيال قد أطاف وسلما
As imagination circled round and climbed,
ألا هل أطل الأمير الأجل
Has not the most noble prince delayed?
ألا ليت لمح البارق المتألق
Alas! Would that lightning's gleam envelop
شراب الأماني لو علمت سراب
The draught of wishes, if only you knew it is a mirage
لله نورية المحيا
To Allah belongs the radiant brightness
كفاني شكوى أن أرى المجد شاكيا
My complaint that Glory should complain sufficed me,
دن دين معتمل في الله مبتهل
The religion of one devout in God, beseeching
لقد زار من أهوى على غير موعد
The one I love came to visit without warning
يا نزهة النفس يا مناها
O solace of the soul, O its delight
أي عيش أو غذاء أو سنه
What food, life, or age
ألا سرت القبول ولو نسيما
Alas, joy has slipped away, though it were but a breeze
لك الله من برق تراءى فسلما
For you, from lightning that flashed, I bid farewell
كفى حكمة لله أنك صائر
Enough proof of God that you shall return
قل ما تشاء بمحفل أو مجهل
Say what you will in public or private
أوجهك بسام وطرفي باكي
Your faces are smiling, while my eyes are weeping,
ومحمولة فوق المناكب عزة
With a burden atop shoulders—pride
تجردت عن غسق
She shed the twilight
ألا رب يوم لي بباب الزخارف
Oh, the days when I was at the door of delights
أيجني على مهجتي طرفه
His glance wounds my passion,
ألا رب رأس لا تزاور بينه
Alas for many a head that rests not near
سدد مرامي الطفل في شأنه
Guide the child's purpose in his affair
ماذا عليك وقد نأيت ديارا
What is it to you, now that you've left the homelands
تشفع بعلق للشباب خطير
He interceded with eloquence for the precarious youth
كتبت وقلبي في يديك أسير
I wrote while my heart was captive in your hands
حدر القناع عن الصباح المسفر
The morning cast aside its veil in splendor
أما والتفات الروض عن أزرق النهر
The garden turns from the blue river,
وأراكة ضربت سماء فوقنا
And a bouquet struck a sky above us
يأهل أندلس لله دركم
O people of Andalusia, may God bless you
أريت أي بنية
Have you seen which young girl
وصهوة عزم قد تمطيت والدجى
With resolute determination I donned the dark night
ألا ماء إلا فوق نصل يجرد
Water flows only from the point of a spear,
رفعت عليك عويلها الأمجاد
The glories raised their wailing for you,
وموقد نار حتى كأنما
By a firebrand that seems as though
وأطلس ملء جانحتيه خوف
And the expanse of his wings filled with fear
ماللعذار وكان وجهك قبلة
No blame for yearning, when your face was a qibla
تخيرته من رهط أعوج سابحا
I chose him from a crooked tribe swimming,
ومعين ماء البشر أبرق هشة
The wellspring of mankind's water sparkled softly,
وصدر ناد نظمنا
We composed with a generous breast
ما إن درى ذاك الذميم وقد شكا
That worthless one does not know, though he complains
أفي ما تؤدي الريح عرف سلام
In what the wind whispers, is there a fragrance of peace?
أرقت أكف الدمع طورا وأسفح
I shed tears profusely for a while, then let them flow
ألا قل لذات الخال عني إنني
Tell the beauty mark on the cheek from me that I
ومعشوقة الحسن ممشوقة
And the beloved of beauty, so finely drawn
عوجاء تعطف ثم ترسل تارة
Crooked, she bends, then straightens, now and then;
يا مترفا يمشي الهوينا غرة
O you who walks arrogantly, strutting
أنعم فقد هبت النعامى
The ostrich has been gracious and kind
إنما العيش مدام أحمر
Life is but ruby wine
لا والذي تجلى الكروب
No, by Him in whose face the clouds uncovered shine,
وأغر يسفر للعوالي والعلى
The dawn allures to heights sublime, remote,
لك الخير أي الخير في رد صاحب
Goodness belongs to you, O friend of mine
وغمامة لم يستقل بها السرى
With clouds the rising morning star could not master,
دع عنك من لوم قوم لست تخبرهم
Turn from blaming a people whom you do not know
مر بنا وهو بدر تم
He passed by us, a full moon
تحلت به من كوكب لبة الدجى
The mantle of dusk adorned it with a starry brooch
سمح الخيال على النوى بمزار
Imagination roamed freely, visiting the beloved's abode,
أقوى محل من شبابك آهل
A mighty dwelling was stronger than your youth,
ألا زاحم الليل بي أشقر
Alas, a blond knight intruded on my night,
ويوم صقيل للشباب ظللته
A day polished for youth’s delight I’ve made its shade,
وتيقن أن الله أكرم جيرة
And he was certain that God is the most generous of neighbors
صلني لك الخير برمانة
Connect me for you with goodness through a pomegranate
خذها يرن لها الجواد صهيلا
Take her, the steed neighs for her a whinny,
صح الهوى منك ولكنني
My love for you has faded, but still
يا حبذا والبرق يزحف بكرة
O what a joy when the lightning creeps at dawn
ألا قانع من ملك كسرى بكسرة
Is not one kingdom enough for Kisra's heir that he seeks to seize another?
رب ابن ليل سقانا
The son of many a night made me drunk
عاط أخلاءك المداما
Give your friends wine to drink
وظلام ليل لا شهاب بأفقه
And the dark night with no shooting stars in its horizon
كتبت وقد خصرت راحتي
I wrote when my wrist was worn
صحا عن اللهو صاح عافه خلقا
The reveler awoke, a man refined
لاعب تلك الريح ذاك اللهب
That breeze played with that flame
ومفازة لانجم في ظلمائها
In a vast desert where no stars shine
قل للقبيح الفعال يا حسنا
Say to the doer of ugly deeds, "O beautiful one
بهرت جمالا فرعت البصر
Your beauty stunned me, so I averted my eyes,
ألا صمت الأجداث عني فلم تجب
Alas! The graves were deaf to my cries; they did not answer.
ياهزة الغصن الوريق
O swaying branch, delicate bough
الآن سح غمام النصر فانهملا
Now the clouds of victory have dispersed, no longer gathered,
تعلقته نشوان من خمر ريقه
I am infatuated with his intoxicating wine-like saliva,
وليل طرقت المالكية تحته
And a night I knocked on al-Malikiyah under it
بذات المكارم ذاك الألم
With the noble virtues lies that pain,
أبشرك أم ماء يسح وبستان
Do I give you good news, or is it water that washes and a garden in bloom?
ربما استضحك الحباب حبيب
Perhaps a lover laughed at the delights of love,
ألا بكى الدر فوق حالية
The tear shed over a cheek
تفاوت نجلا أبي جعفر
The sons of my father Ja'far are so different
وكأس أنس قد جلتها المنى
And a cup of conviviality that wishes have fulfilled,
أما وشباب قد ترامت به النوى
While youth passed by with its goals,
يا رب ليل بته
O Lord of a night whose darkness
أذن الغمام بديمة وعقار
The clouds intimated a gentle rain and aromatic plants,
ألا رب يوم حثت الكاس خطوه
Alas, many a day when the cup hastened his steps
ومثلك مد يمين الندى
Like you, the dewdrop stretched out
ياحبذا والطيف ضيف طارق
O beloved, the breeze is a guest that comes knocking
ومائسة تزهى وقد خلع الحيا
A feast beautifully adorned now that summer’s come
ألم يسقيني سلافة ريقه
Did he not quench my thirst with the saliva of his mouth
ركضوا الجياد إلى الجلاد صباحا
The steeds raced to battle at dawn
وعشي أنس أضجعتني نشوة
In the bliss of an evening I lay down to rest
لعمري لو أضعت في منهج التقى
By my life, if I set an upright way,
وأغر كاد لطافة وطلاقة
He captivated with his subtlety and fluency,
وأسود عن لنا سابح
A swimmer told of inky nights for us
يا رب قطر جامد حلى به
O Lord of frozen drops that adorned
وخيرية بين النسيم وبينها
The fragrance of her breath mingles with the breeze at night
ألا ياحبذا ضحك الحميا
How wonderful is the laughter of the doves
يا أيها الصب المعنى به
O object of my passion, behold!
بشرى كما أسفر وجه الصباح
Good tidings, as the face of morning dawned
ومشرف الهادي طويل السرى
With lofty stature and lengthy stride
أي زمان جاد إلا نهب
What era has ever been generous, or what calamity has ever passed?
غازلته من حبيب وجهه فلق
I flirted with a beloved whose face was radiant
أيها التائه مهلا
O wanderer, wait,
يامنية النفس حسبي من تشكيك
O desire of my soul, I've had enough of your doubts
ومرقرق الإفرند أبرق بهجة
With its shimmering silk the robe sparkled with delight,
أرقت على الصبا لطلوع نجم
I lost sleep over youth for a star's rising
يا راكضا في شوط كل سيادة
O you who run in every race of glory
آليت إلا أن تسير مع الفضل
I have resolved to walk with virtue,
بعيشك هل تدري أهوج الجنائب
Do you know, my life, if the raging south winds
وافى لنا وله صحيفة صفحة
There came to us and him a page of a book
يانشر عرف الروضة الغناء
O breeze of the fragrant garden and the shaded willow,
ومغرد هزج الغناء مطرب
With a warbler, melodious with song,
ألا ثل من عرش الشباب وثلما
Alas, let me weep for my past youth
ألا فضلت ذيلها ليلة
Oh, a night has trailed its skirt,
يحل بها أدنى الرياح فليتها
The softest wind makes it tremble, I wish it
قالت وقد حطت العنوان جوهرة
She said, whilst she lowered her aim down a rank,
إن للجنة في الأندلس
In Andalusia there lies a garden
قام يسعى بها غلام يغني
A boy carrying it walked and sang,
يا جامعا بمساويه وطلعته
O gatherer of twilight and its ascent
ومغار ركبت أدهم معطا
I rode a tawny camel towards him
بما حزته من شريف النظام
With the honourable principles you uphold
وأغيد معسول اللمى والمراشف
He brought honey-sweet wine and pillows
وأشقر تضرم منه الوغى
With flaxen hair, from which strife is kindled,
جهلت وما ألقى عليما وإنما
I was ignorant, though I met no teacher, and I recoiled,
نهر كما سال اللمى سلسال
A river flowing as tears flowed
أجبت وقد نادى الغرام فأسمعا
I answered though love had called, so listen,
سجعت وقد غنى الحمام فرجعا
I composed poetry while the dove cooed, so they responded in rhyme
صممت سمعا فما أصغي إلى العذل
I turned a deaf ear, heeding not the blame;
وصقيلة الأنوار تلوي عطفها
The polish of lights winds its arm,
أطرسك أم ثغر تبسم واضح
Your cheeks, are they a smile that beamed bright,
حسب الفتى حلية أن يستقل به
It suffices a young man as an ornament that he can get by on his own,
ومرقرق الإفرند يمضي في العدا
With his blue sword flashing, he rode on
ألا طم بحر أتي طما
Has not the sea of destruction raged,
حيا بها ونسيمها كنسيمه
Her liveliness and her breeze like his breeze
ألا ساجل دموعي ياغمام
O clouds, record my tears
أرأيك أمضى أم حسامك يقطع
Do I see your resolution or your sword cutting sharper,
شأوت مطايا الصبا مطلبا
I aspired to ride the steeds of youth seeking my desire
ألا نسخ الله القطار حجارة
Alas! God has turned the rain into stones
لا تودعن ولا الجماد سريرة
Do not entrust your secret even to the inert,
من ليلة للرعد فيها صرخة
From a night when thunder roared
وألزمته حكم الهوى فالتقى به
And I bound him to the rule of passion, so he met with it
ورداء ليل بات فيه معانقي
A cloak of night embraced me
ألا قل للمريض القلب مهلا
Alas! Tell the sick at heart to have patience,
أهزك لا إني إخالك نابيا
I shake you not out of anger towards you
لم أنس ليلة رعت سربك زائرا
I shall not forget the night I visited your flock
ألا مضى عصر الصبا فانقضى
Alas, the days of youth have passed away and vanished,
أما واهتصار غصون البلس
The branches of the palm tree stir and sway
وأسود يسبح في لجة
A black man swimming in the darkness
وأروع أمجد قرظته
His eloquence's brilliance outshone
أنى تطاولني ودوني بسطتا
How dare you defy me when my power lies open before me
وعسى الليالي أن تمن بجمعنا
Perhaps the nights will grant us to be united
وضيف طيف أم من هاجر
The guest of a specter, or rather a wanderer,
وليل تعاطينا المدام وبيننا
On a night, we drank wine, and between us
فيا لشجا قلب من الصبر فارغ
O heart bursting with patience, now empty,
وقد غشي النبت بطحاءه
The grass has covered its plains
والشمس شاحبة الجبين مريضة
The sun is pale-faced, sickly,
ومرتبع حططت الرحل منه
I pitched my tent on a hillock
نبه وليدك من صباه بزجرة
Awaken your child in his youth with reprimand
ليهنك وافد أنس سرى
A visitor of joy arrived, traveling at night
يا أيها الطود المنيع الأيهم
O you firm, tall, and splendid mountain,
في كل ناد منك روض ثناء
In every club of yours is a garden of praise,
وخميلة قد أخملت سربالها
A lovely one has let down her cloak,
وصقيل إفرند الشباب بطرفه
With the polish of youth's blade its edge
ومخطوط السواد كأن دمعا
The manuscript of darkness is as if
أسجايا كما ترق المدامه
My aspirations soar like the glimmer of wine
ألا عرس الإخوان في ساحة البلى
Alas, the brothers held a wedding in the abode of tribulation!
جفن تجافى للخلي عن الكرى
A lid that spurns the friend, turns away,
وأبيض عضب حالف النصر صاحبا
With fury's whitest wrath he swore to win,
تقبل المهر من أخي ثقة
Accept the gift from my trusted brother
وساق لخيل اللحظ في شأو حسنه
With legs for the horses of moments in the glory of his beauty
ألا إن خفض العيش في صرخة العزف
Alas! The lowliness of life is in the cry of music,
طاف الظلام به فأسرج أدهما
Darkness enveloped it, so I saddled the dark one,
وعاذر قد كان لي عاذلا
My reproacher was once my censurer
أرقت وقد نام الخلي لنازح
I lay awake though my companion slept,
وكمامة حدر الصباح قناعها
Like a veil the morning lowered its mask
أما واعتزاز السيف والضيف والندى
With pride of sword, guest, and dew
ألا دعاني اليوم داعي النهى
Behold, the summoner to abstinence calls me today,
وقوراء بيضاء المحاسن طلقة
With a radiant white beauty I wore the ignorant night as day
وندي أنس هزني
The companion of joy intoxicated me,
أما لديك حلاوه
وغريبة هشت إلي غريرة
لك الله من سار إلي مسلم
سقيا لها من بطاح أنس
لذكرك ماعب الخليج يصفق
جميل يميل إلى مثله
من موقف أفصحت بيض السيوف به
جرر ملاءة كل يوم شامس
أفي كل يوم رجفة لملمة
يا بارقا قدح الزناد وعارضا
وحسام بكف أشوس أجرى
وبيضاء في صفراء تحمل نفحة
اقض على خلك أو ساعد
يا رب مائسة المعاطف تزدهي
بمثل علاك من ملك حسيب
يا ضاحكا ملء فيه جهلا
رحلت عنكم ولي فؤاد
يا صدى بالثغر جاوره
أنفحة طيب ما تنسمت أم نظم
ترى يوسفا في ثوبه حسن صورة
ومقنع بخلا بنضرة حسنه
أرقت لذكرى منزل شط نازح
وحلة من طراز النظم رائعة
الليل إلا حيث كنت طويل
أحس المدامة والنسيم عليل
ما ضار لابس مثله من خاتم
كفى حزنا أن الديار قصية
أورى بأفقك بارق يتألق
قل للمقيم مع النفوس علاقة
ولجة تفرق أو تعشق
أطل وقد خط في خده
أذن الرحيل بلقية لوداع
ألا إنها سن تزيد فأنقص
درسوا العلوم ليملكوا بجدالهم
غيري من يعتد من أنسه
ياحبذا نادي الندام ومجتلى
هذا غراب دجاك ينعب فازجر
أما ومسيل ماثل الغيث كالسطر
لا العطايا ولا الرزايا بواق
لقد أصخت إلى نجواك من قمر
ومرهف كلسان النار منصلت
سرى يرتمي ركضا به كل موجة
وأغيد حلو اللمى أملد
يا ليل وجد بنجد
ومهفهف طاوي الحشا
ندى النسيم فما أرق وأعطرا
يا بانة تهتز فينانة
ونشوان غنته حمامة أيكة على
طرق الرجال إلى المعالي جمة
وأهيف قام يسقي
هل ساءه أن آل آسا ورده
وسرحة خاض منها ظلها نهرا
وأغر ضاحك وجهه مصباحه
وأسمر يلحظ عن أزرق
أبى البرق إلا أن يحن فؤاد
رأيت بخاله في صحن خده
تهاداني لذكركم ارتياح
وأخطل لو تعاطى سبق برق
إن الليالي لا دهتك لعائثه
برعت فرعت فمن ذا حبيب
يا لين عطفي واخضرار جنابي
ألا حبذا عيد تلاقت به المنى
ألا قصر كل بقاء ذهاب
أأدعو فلا تلوي وأنت قريب
يارب وضاح الجبين كأنما
سقيا ليوم قد أنخت بسرحة
فتق الشباب بوجنتيها وردة
ومطهم شرق الأديم كأنما
وأغيد في صدر الندي لحسنه
ألا أفصح الطير حتى خطب
في مثله من طارق الأرزاء
لله نهر سال في بطحاء
ومجر ذيل غمامة قد نمقت
خذها إليك وإنها لنضيرة
