1. I shed tears profusely for a while, then let them flow
And at times wet my cheeks, then wipe them dry

2. Below you is a weeping cloud, pouring down rain
Dusting the ground and stirring up dust

3. When night comes with its darkness
I light the flint of worries and strike a flame

4. And follow the sweet memory of one in pain
So it wafts here as longing flows there

5. I face the dawn growing dark and gloomy
Thinking it is night when morning should break

6. A companion of night startles me with his wailing
I deter him at night but he won't budge

7. I start my day remembering Muhammad
And all that once pleased me now seems ugly

8. I fear the death of youth but then I hope
God will forgive and pardon my sins

9. A boy seized the side of a hill
Galloping freely though stumbling on pebbles

10. I say as the letter announcing his death arrived
Its words explicit though causing distress

11. A Syrian with suppressed sorrows aims his arrow
And shoots, wounding a heart in the Levant

12. Oh stranger whom death unexpectedly took
In the prime of youth, persisting and forceful

13. As if a flaming fire burned between my ribs
With embers between my eyelids glowing

14. I blamed fate though I used to praise and flatter
You'd see me moan like a heart-broken dove

15. Drowning in a sea of tears, worries and darkness
I would swim even if it were just one sea

16. I send the northern winds greetings
Sighing under the water of my eyes until it trembles

17. I glance up at the sky and ache
Swaying southward though I resist and abstain

18. I held back my soul though it insisted
And resisted despair though patience is best

19. Sleep my tearful eyes
For each vessel exudes what fills it

20. I despaired a heart that used to flutter with hope
And ambitions would surge in it and aspire

21. I no longer expect travelers to bring tidings
Or a message to read and contemplate

22. My eyes are tied to the night by a dark blue rope
And grey tears flow freely down my cheek

23. When the palace of company breeds loneliness
I do not wish to be happy and rejoice

24. O you who faces night vigilant and wakeful
Walking far and wide wiping out miles

25. Take to the stranger's grave tears falling
Where you walked may they flow and drench

26. And send greetings across the sea to reach him
May the flowers of the valley emit their fragrance

27. Stop by the beloved's tomb with a glance
That makes my eyes see him there and discern
