1. Alas, the brothers held a wedding in the abode of tribulation!
And they did not raise aught but tombs with domes.
2. So tears flowed as the clouds poured down, and anguish
Was as the lightning of the North wind flashed.
3. Whenever evening brought me to a halt in the abodes,
I found joy in entering and leaving them.
4. My eyes roamed the dwellings of youths
Whose bright faces I had bereft of their bloom.
5. Long was my pause between yearning and sighing,
Calling out to forms that gave no answer.
6. I erased the charm of patience for an instant with weeping
With which I inscribed a page of my book.
7. Their bodies and dwellings are worn away.
I saw only tombs and desolation.
8. It is enough for me by way of lament
That I see the abode as broken ground
