1. I sought asylum in the best sanctuary, from your heights,
And I pitched my tent in your fertile land.

١. يَمَّمتُ مِن عَلياكَ خَيرَ مُيَمِّمٍ
وَحَلَلتُ مِن مَغناكَ دارَ مُخَيَّمِ

2. So I took off the heavy necklace of worries,
And I comforted my soul from the loads of passion.

٢. فَخَلَعتُ عَن عُنُقي حَميلَةَ ضارِمٍ
وَأَرَحتُ نَفسي مِن حُمالَةَ مَغرَمِ

3. I descended into fertility at the best dwelling,
And I arrived in security at the head of a restless camel.

٣. وَنَزَلتُ مِن خِصبٍ بِأَمرَعَ مَنزِلٍ
وَحَلَلتُ مِن أَمنٍ بِرَأسِ يَلَملَمِ

4. And even if dangers and journeys tired me,
And the darkness of a mournful night overwhelmed me.

٤. وَلَئِن تَهادَتنِيَ المَطايا وَالسُرى
وَعُبابُ لُجَّةِ كُلِّ لَيلٍ مُظلِمِ

5. Yet I settled while the nights had their rounds,
Adorned in their dreaminess, the eyes of the stars.

٥. فَلَقَد سَكَنتُ وَلِلَّيالي جَولَةٌ
كُحِلَت بِهَبوَتِها عُيونُ الأَنجُمِ

6. It suffices as protection of status and chastity,
That I clung to the secure pledge of Maryam.

٦. وَكَفى اِحتِماءَ مَكانَةٍ وَصِيانَةٍ
أَنّي عَلِقتُ بِذِمَّةٍ مِن مَريَمِ

7. Of trustworthiness, religion and piety,
And the most noble character and straightest path.

٧. ذاتِ الأَمانَةِ وَالدِيانَةِ وَالتُقى
وَالخُلقِ الأَشرَفِ وَالطَريقِ الأَقوَمِ

8. Of majesty, bounty, and deterrence from vice,
And the most elevated house and the most generous pillar.

٨. ذاتِ الجَلالَةِ وَالجَزالَةِ وَالنُهى
وَالبَيتِ الأَرفَعِ وَالنِصابِ الأَكرَمِ

9. From a family who at the time of tribulation
Bite their moustaches with the darkest gall.

٩. مِن أُسرَةٍ يَتَلَثَّمونَ إِلى الوَغى
يَومَ الحَفيظَةِ بِالعَجاجِ الأَقتَمِ

10. From the house of glory and spears where none
Is met except with veneration and magnification.

١٠. مِن بَيتِ عِزٍّ مِن نِبالٍ حَيثُ لا
تُلقى بِغَيرِ مُسَوَّدٍ وَمُعَظَّمِ

11. Welcoming visitors joyfully
Or hitting the head of the roaming spy.

١١. مُتَهَلِّلٍ لِلطارِقينَ بَشاشَةً
أَو ضارِبٍ رَأسَ الكَمِيِّ المُعلَمِ

12. A knight whose brilliance his helmet reveals
Shining during events that make men frown.

١٢. طَلقٍ يَشِفُّ لِثامُهُ عَن كَوكَبٍ
مُتَأَلِّقٍ في الحادِثِ المُتَجَهِّمِ

13. Advancing in the chest of every brave battalion,
Whose flanks his sword paints with blood.

١٣. مُتَقَدِّمٍ في صَدرِ كُلِّ كَتيبَةٍ
شَهباءَ يَندى جانِباها بِالدَمِ

14. At whom every cultured person smiles
And every pale-faced frowns.

١٤. يَثني بِها عِطفَيهِ كُلُّ مُثَقَّفٍ
لَدنٍ وَيَضحَكُ كُلُّ أَبيَضَ مِخذَمِ

15. If Hatim Tai is generous, he is generous over there,
Or if Rabia Ibn Mukaddam contends, he contends.

١٥. إِن جادَ جادَ هُناكَ حاتِمُ طَيِّئٍ
أَو صالَ صالَ رَبيعَةُ بنُ مُكَدَّمِ

16. And if you seek refuge through him, you seek it in an impenetrable
Refuge of the fugitive and treasure of the destitute.

١٦. وَإِنِ اِستَجَرتَ بِهِ اِستَجَرتَ بِهَضبَةٍ
مَأوى الطَريدِ بِها وَكَنزُ المُعدَمِ

17. None of the living stumble at its thresholds
Except the stumblings of the lame or the blind.

١٧. لاتَعثُرُ الأَحياءُ دونَ طُروقِهِ
إِلّا بِشَلوَةِ لَهذَمٍ أَو ضَيغَمِ

18. A free woman approaches him, so wealthy
She disdains to belong to other clans.

١٨. تُنمى إِلَيهِ مِنَ الحَرائِرِ حُرَّةٌ
تَغنى بِسُؤدُدِ ذاتِها أَن تَنتَمي

19. Famous for her nobility and chastity,
As famous as a charming doe in Dahm.

١٩. مَشهورَةٌ في الفَضلِ قِدماً وَالنُهى
وَالنُبلِ شُهرَةَ غُرَّةٍ في أَدهَمِ

20. The generous stars brought her to him generously,
She who never longs for the whiteness of dirhams.

٢٠. جاءَت بِها الغُرُّ الكِرامُ كَريمَةً
لا تَشرَئِبُّ إِلى بَياضِ الدِرهَمِ

21. The necklace sits high around her neck,
As a new moon sits high in the horizon.

٢١. سِطَةُ القِلادَةِ رِفَعَةً وَمَكانُها
مِن كُلِّ مَعلاةٍ مَكانُ اللَهذَمِ

22. All hands refrain like those of a respected lover,
From the hand the dew descends from its clouds.

٢٢. تولي الأَيادي عَن يَدٍ نَزَلَ النَدى
مِنها بِمَنزِلَةِ المُحِبِّ المُكَرَّمِ

23. It attracted to her the free praise of Āqilah,
More radiant than the frowning clouds.

٢٣. مِن كُلِّ عارِفَةٍ كَما اِنسَجَمَ الحَيا
وَاِفتَرَّ بارِقُ مُزنَةٍ عَلى مَبسِمِ

24. A generosity at which mounts kneel down in travel
From a helper, the winds blow to.

٢٤. عَلِقَت بِها حُرَّ الثَناءِ عَقيلَةٌ
أَندى يَدَينِ مِنَ الغَمامِ المُرزِمِ

25. The green grass sprouts fresh with it,
And the tail of the wind grows fragrant breaths.

٢٥. جودٌ تَنوءُ بِهِ الرِكابُ عَلى السَرى
مِن مُنجِدٍ أَرجِ الرِياحِ وَمُتهِمِ

26. It wandered the countries without glooming,
In one condition, facing towards the eternal.

٢٦. يَندى بِهِ النَبتُ الهَشيمُ نَضارَةً
وَيَنِمُّ ذَيلُ الريحِ طيبَ تَنَسُّمِ

27. And it unshackles the fetters of the captives of destitution,
And the eloquent tribesman with the incomprehensible accent.

٢٧. خَبَطَ البِلادَ يَمُرُّ غَيرَ مُغَيِّمٍ
في حالَةٍ وَيَصوبُ صَوبَ مُدَيِّمِ

28. The free were ruled by the noblest woman,
And the scant handed stretched to her his empty palm.

٢٨. وَيَفُكُّ مِن أَغلالِ أَسرى فاقَةٍ
وَفَصيحَ قَومٍ في مَقادَةِ أَعجَمِ

29. Al-Quraishi carried praise of her, and he only
