زعمت أن كتابا

هز النسيم معاطف الأغصان
The breeze shook the robes of the branches
كنما النيل الخضم إذ بدا
Like the mighty Nile when it began

فكان فريدا في الزمان مقدما

فسر لي عابر مناما
A passerby interpreted for me a dream
أحذر نديمي أن تذوق المسكرا

ولما بدت تلك السيوف جداولا
When those swords appeared as streams
لي عدو يقوم مني بلا رجل

تشلفهت من صهوي لزمقار ملقم

إن السناجرة الكرام لمثلنا
The generous falconers are like us
نعم أنت أعلى من نؤمله قدرا

لاحت لنا في جنح ليل داج
In the folds of a dark night, there appeared
ولدي بأجرتكم غدا مسترهنا
My earnings are mortgaged tomorrow
القطر منتثر والزهر منتظم
The rain is scattered and the flowers arranged
يا لائمي في أعرج
O you who blame me for loving one who limps,
أبا شاكر يا من علا كل رتبة
O Abū Shākir, O you who transcended every rank
إن البلاد التي أصبحت واليها
The land which you have become its ruler
لقد هجرت بيتي القطاط لنقده
The cats have abandoned my home, finding no crumbs to feed on.
صفع البرهان وما رحما
