اذا تغنى الحمام

1. When the dove coos,
The lover weeps for love's ache,

١. اذا تغنى الحمام
أبكى المشوق الغرام

2. Yearning, oh how yearning!
The dove coos, a dove.

٢. وحنَّ والشوق أنىّ
غنى الحمام حِمام

3. O you who left home, but
My heart remains in place.

٣. يا نازحَ الدَّار لكن
له الفؤادُ مُقامُ

4. You deemed my love forbidden, so make it permitted,
For what reason is it banned?

٤. حَلَلْتَ هَجري فوصلي
لأيِّ شيء حرامُ

5. If my eyes were your paradise,
Then in them lies agony.

٥. إنْ كنتَ جَنةَ طرفي
فالقلبُ فيه ضرامُ

6. Or if your lips were lightning,
Then my eyelids are clouds.

٦. أَو كانَ ثغرُك برقاً
فإن جَفني غَمامُ

7. Why do I sleepless lie
When darkness falls?

٧. ما لي أَبيتُ مُسجّى
إذا تبدى الظلامُ

8. Sleep evades my eyes
Or reproach my ears.

٨. لا يدخلُ النّومُ جفني
ولا بسمعي الملام

9. Visit me, even if but a specter,
For where is slumber from me?

٩. زرني ولو زرتُ طيفاً
وأينَ مني المنامُ

10. If not for your beauty
Wine would not tempt me.

١٠. لولا لماكَ لما كانَ
تَطّبيني المدامُ

11. Nor would I have harbored
A love hidden by the veil.

١١. ولا كِلفتُ غراماً
بما حواه اللثامُ

12. God in me, for I have been truthful
To the lover, though blamed.

١٢. اللهَ فِيَّ فقد قي
لَ لِلْمُحِبِّ ذمامُ

13. You shook your neck like a spear
And my eyelids bled from it.

١٣. هَزَزْتَ قَدَّكَ رُمحاً
والجفنُ منه حسامُ

14. Over your eyes an arch
With lids as arrows.

١٤. وفوقَ طرفك قوس
له الجفونُ سهامُ

15. Your only aim is
To kill me, with farewell.

١٥. وَليس قصدُكَ إلا
قتلي أسىً والسّلام

16. By God, you'll get naught from me,
Though the King helps you.

١٦. تالله لا نِلتَ مني
ولي المليك الهمامُ

17. The secret of his people is
The letters Noon, Jeem and Laam.

١٧. سَر الرعّية منهُ
نون وجيم ولامُ

18. He appeared a new crescent, though
His father was a full moon.

١٨. بدا هِلالاً ولكن
أَبوهُ بدر تمامُ

19. Good tidings to kings of a king
Whose time is a young lad.

١٩. بُشرى لملوك بمَلكٍ
لهُ الزَّمانُ غُلام

20. To the peak of glories,
His independence and weaning.

٢٠. إلى كمال المعالي
فصالُه والفطام

21. A branch to Dhawha's kingdom,
At which people rejoice.

٢١. غصن لدوحة مُلكٍ
بها تَفَيّا الأنامُ

22. Nay, a stream from springs
With which all pains are cured.

٢٢. بَلْ جدولٌ من عُبابٍ
بهِ يداوي الأوام
