منعوا خيالك أن يلم بنا
They forbid your phantom to meet with us
ودوح مالت الأغصان منه
A lonely, withering tree, whose boughs are bent with grief,
أستغفر الله من تركي وإخلالي
I seek God's forgiveness for my shortcomings and lapses
سلا ظبية الوعساء هل فقدت خشفا
Ask the forlorn gazelle, has she lost her fawn?
شرفت بنظم مديحك الفكر
Your praise has ennobled thought,
السيف منتقم والجد معتذر
The sword is avenging, and striving is excusable,
أرأيت من داء الصبابة عائدا
Did you return from the torment of youth, and find
ومفوق ألحاظه وسهامه
With piercing glances and arrows,
أبى الله إلا أن يكون لك السعد
God willed that you be blessed with good fortune,
ما على العدال لو نظروا
If the virtuous gazed upon you
لا تغبط القبر على جدة
Do not envy the grave for its newness
أترى طيفكم لما سرى
Do you see their specter when they set out
أرأيت طيف خيالها لما سرى
Did you see her phantom image when it departed,
سقى بانة الجرعاء من بطن توضح
He gave drink to Bana, the thirsty one, from the belly of Tuwaḍaḥ,
أحلني الدهر لدى معشر
Time has joined me with a group
أعرفت من عبق النسيم الفائح
The scent of the gentle breeze revealed
يا دمنة في الطلول دارسة
O dweller in the hills studying
وبعيدة سمح الخيال بقربها
Though distant, my imagination made her near
أما الشريف من الغضا فبعيد
The noble man is far from stinginess,
وليلة وصل غاب عنا رقيبها
And on a night of union her watchman wandered away
ألم أقل لك لا تخلس محاسنه
Did I not tell you, do not secretly glance at her charms?
وقالوا قد تغيرت الليالي
They said the nights have changed
سلوا أعادي إذا كنتم
Ask my enemies, if you are
يا ناق إن أثرى العذيب وروضا
O she-camel, if the perfumes of Udhayb delight me
أنفقت بعد أبي العلاء مدامعا
I shed tears for Abu al-Ala after his death
لست أخشى تغيرا في اعتقادك
I do not fear your belief will change
يا حبيبا وده للناس
O friend whose affection for people is the image of hypocrisy
أظن نسيم الريح من حيث أرسلا
I think the soft breeze from where it was sent
أفي نجد تحاورك القبول
In Najd, does acceptance converse with you?
قد زجر الشعر لكم فاله
Poetry has admonished you, so do not ignore it
أتظن الورق في الأيك تغني
Do you think the leaves in the branches sing for you?
سل العيس ما بين اللوى فأبان
Ask the scout between the sand dunes, so he makes clear
لا تعذل القلب على وجده
Do not blame the heart for its passion
تحاذر أن أسبك يا ابن سلمى
You fear I insult you, son of Salma
إن كان ليلي طويلا بعد بينكم
Though after you my night be long, I've known
واخجلتا للطيف لما سرى
The shy night had slipped away,
أناخ علي الهم من كل جانب
Sorrow besieged me from every side,
يا نديمي على الهموم ويا حا
O my comrade in sorrows, O carrier
أستغفر الله سري في الهوى علن
I seek Allah's forgiveness, my secret love for passion made public
هذا كتابي عن كمال سلامة
This is my book on the perfection of Salama
لمن دمن بين الغوير وأربع
For whom are tears between yearning and regret,
أبا حسن ما هفوتي بغريبة
O Abā Ḥasan, my offense against you is not trivial
يا من رميت بعتبه حاشاك من
O You whom I was blamed for, far be it from blame that is hard for me or aloofness. I have an example in what I did and I am not one whom the gestures of purposes are hidden from. Had it not been for your love, you would have found me with my nature a sun and my sword determined to break off. So be gentle with me and be not hasty regarding what I fear and my opponent is pleased with. And of the wonders is that there would be a case that the opponents accept and the judge refuses.
لولا سني الدولة بن محمد
If it were not for Saniyu ad-Dawlah ibn Muhammad
مرت تثنى وبها هزة
She passed swaying, her branch leaning deceptively
قد غادر الشعراء من يتردم
The poets have left one who elegizes
ما لي أراك على قلاك تناكرت
Why do I see you put aside your worries
إليك عني فليس الخوف من شيمي
Towards you from me, so fear not my morals
توق كلامي يا ابن عمرو فإنه
Cease your words, O son of Amr, for they are
أيها النفس أقلي
O soul, lighten your burden
سرينا إلى الملك الدوفنيي
We journeyed to the King of Dauphiny
أراني منك يا كعب بن عمرو
I see that you, Ka'b bin 'Amr,
إذا هجوتكم لم أخش سطوتكم
If I insult you, I fear not your tyranny,
طلب الأمن في الزمان عسير
Seeking security in these times is hard,
أرقت لبرق كمتن الحسام
I was kept awake by lightning like the winking eyes of a doe
رمت بالحمى أبصارها مطمئنة
She cast her eyes towards the sanctuary in tranquility
لاح وعقد الليل مسلوب
The night's bonds loosened, and lightning sparked with a flame of yearning
إذا اتقى القوم قبل الصيد في حرم
If people avoid hunting before the lawful season is due,
لحا الله مغلوبا على نصل سيفه
May God destroy him, fallen upon his sword
رمى الدهر دوني وهو جم صروفه
Fortune threw me down while its ways were violent
ألا أرقت للمع برق سار
Oh, did I not stay awake longing for the lightening's flash
أيا ملك الروم شتما لهم
O king of Rome, insults to them,
يا حادي الأظعان أين تميل
O guide of yearnings, where are you inclined
يا راكب العرمس الوجناء معترضا
O rider of the lean camel crossing
في كل يوم نشطة ووثاق
Every day she is active and bound,
بقيت وقد شطت بكم غربة النوى
I remained while separation from you has swept the homes
ما على الواشين من حرج
No blame is there on the lovers
أما تريان البرق في غلس الدجى
Don't you see the lightning in the darkness of night
ثورها ناشطة عقالها
Her passion stirred her, sharpening her intellect
يا نازحا حكمت علي
O you who migrated, time's misfortunes
بحياة زينب يا ابن عبد الواحد
By the life of Zainab, O Ibn Abd al-Wahid
فإن كفروا نعماك فيهم فإنها
If they deny your favors among them, then
أستغفر الله لا فخر ولا شرف
I seek forgiveness from Allah, no pride or glory
يا مالك الثغر الذي بسيوفه
O owner of the radiant face whose swords
ومعذل جار على غلوائه
With Mu'adhdhal, continuing his excesses
تروح بنجد تغصب الذئب زاده
You travel in Najd forcing the wolf to carry provisions,
خليلي بثا ما أملت عليكما
My two friends, I have shed my tears over you both
صرفت بعدلك صرف الزمان
You turned the course of time with your justice,
أما ظباك فقد دانت لها الأمم
Your beauty has subdued all nations
وظبي من الأتراك رنحه الصبا
A gazelle from the Turks, the breeze has inclined him,
نصحتك فافعل كل خير لحسنه
I advised you, so do every good for its own sake
يا لغني ما لناديكم
O my singer friends, what has happened to your club?
حبتك السماء بأمطارها
The sky blessed you with its rains
أتاني وعرض الرمل بيني وبينه
He came to me while the sands separated me from him
ما أذاعت ريح الصبا لك سرا
What the morning breeze whispered to you secretly,
ما على أحسنكم لو أحسنا
It is no fault of yours if we have done well,
زفت إليك ولست من أكفائها
She was brought to you though she was not your match,
إذا سكنتم فقلبي دائم القلق
When you are still, my heart is ever restless
إذا حدت الريح عيس الحيا
When the wind stirs the branches of the trees
غربت خلائقك الحسان غريبة
Your good manners have become estranged
أما الزمان فموجز في وعظه
Time is brief in its preaching
استغفر الله القديم وعذ به
Seek God's forgiveness, the Eternal, and seek refuge in Him
خف من أمنت ولا تركن إلى أحد
Be wary of those you trust, and do not rely on anyone,
أتذكر فخرا في قبائل يعرب
Do you recall pride in the Arabian tribes?
قل للنسيم إذا حملت تحية
Tell the breeze, when it bears a greeting,
خليلي خلينا الصبا وتعاقلنا
My friend, we left youth and grew mature
وقتك صروف الدهر يا ابن مقلد
The turns of fate have worn you down, O son of one who wears necklaces,
أسرفت في أنس الغريب وبره
You were generous to the stranger and kind to him
أما ظباك فقد وفت بضمانها
Your youth has passed away according to its guarantee
أبا حسن كم ألوم الفراق
Abu Hasan, how much I blame separation
أملالة ضيعت ودي بعدما
After you wasted my love in futility
يقولون شهب الليل تحكم فيهم
They say the stars of night govern their fate
يا ناصر الأمر الذي بسيوفه
O supporter of the cause with swords that humiliated enemies and strengthened faith
إذا عزت صفاتك أن تراما
If your noble traits disdain to be desired,
أما حياكم عبق النسيم
The morning breeze's fragrance greets you,
وما زلت أغضي عنك بالليل كلما
I still turn away from you at night whenever
هل تعرفون لنا في قربكم رشدا
Do you know of any guidance for us in your nearness,
فؤاد يهيم بذكر الوطن
قد قنعنا من وصلكم بالخيال
يا منفذاً ماء الجفون
عسى ليلة الدهناء تسري بدورها
إذا مت فادفني بوعساء سهلة
لو أن قلبي معي سلوت به
آمبيحها فضل الأزمة قصر
يحاربني في كل نائبة دهري
أبكيك لو نهضت بحقك أدمع
إني وإن كنت أبغي الحلم آونة
دعوها تناضل بالأذرع
أينفعني فضل الحنين المرجع
لعل دنو الحي بعد شسوعه
ما بال قلبك لا ينوء بحملها
أغنا جزيل نداك يا ابن مقلد
قد ألف القلب خلاف الذي
هل تسمعون شكاية من عاتب
مضى الصبا وأناس في الصبا عرفوا
يا إخوتي من مالك بن كنانة
من كان يحمد ليلا في تقاصره
خليلي من عوف ابن عذرة إنني
وأهيف منآد القوى يبذل القرى
أيها النوام ويحكم
على أي حال فيك أعجب للغدر
إذا ما الغمام الجون أنجد صوبه
فؤاد ما يقر من الوجيب
إذا أعجمت أطلال هند على البلى
لي راحة يفرق منها الغنى
ما ذكر الروض وقد تنفسا
جهلتم فما وجه النهار بواضح
أبا حسن لو قلت في ذكر وحشتي
ومرنح الأعطاف في أجفانه
كتبت فهجنت الذين تقدموا
أما فؤادي فقد رقت جوانحه
يا نسيم الصبا تحمل وما زلت
كيف أشكو منك الجفاء وما للمجد
وصاحب كلما هممت به
يا غائبا ببعاده وحمامه
لست من عدنان إن لم ترها
تأمل من يلومك في
يقصر ما لي في الحوادث عن بذلي
