ومعذل جار على غلوائه

1. With Mu'adhdhal, continuing his excesses
The tale of his enmity is recounted against his foes

١. وَمُعَذَّلٍ جارٍ عَلى غُلَوائِهِ
يُروى حَديثُ نَداهُ عَن أَعدائِهِ

2. Like a tall spear, he wavers in his resolves
And meanders in his whims

٢. لَدنٍ كَعالِيَةِ القَناةِ يَخِفُّ في
عَزَماتِهِ وَيَميدُ في أَهوائِهِ

3. Full of vices, he leans into his sides
And his loves, comforts, and misfortunes

٣. ثَمِلُ الشَّمائلِ مالَ في أَعطافِهِ
وَوِدادِهِ وَنَعيمِهِ وَشَقائِهِ

4. The hand of fate hastened upon him, and his return
Intoxicated with the wine of youth and its water

٤. عَجِلَت عَلَيهِ يَدُ الحِمام وَعُودُهُ
رَيّانُ مِن خَمرِ الشَّبابِ وَمائِهِ

5. And his lapses followed one another, and sometimes
He stumbled over a whim from his opinions

٥. وَتَتابَعَت هَفَواتُهُ وَلَرُبَّما
فَلَّ الخُطوبَ بِخَطرَةٍ مِن رائِهِ

6. Wondrous is the edge of the sword, how it struck him
And its sharpness in fright, not in its sharpening

٦. عَجَباً لِحَدِّ السَّيفِ كَيفَ أَصابَهُ
وَمَضاؤُهُ في الرَّوع دونَ مَضائِهِ

7. And for Mus'ab who filled the world with his tumult
They led him after his authority and refusal

٧. وَلِمصعَبٍ مَلأَ الزَّمانَ هَديرُهُ
قادوهُ بَعدَ شَماسِهِ وَإِبائِهِ

8. Whether they raise him, they have sung his praises
Or vilify him, they have sufficed with his virtues

٨. إِن يَرفَعوهُ فَقَد غَنوا بِعَلائِهِ
أَو يَشهِروهُ فَقَد كفُوا بِثَنائِهِ

9. Or if the enemies innovate against him, then a
Sunnah for fate proceeding against its peers

٩. أَو تُبدِع الأَعداء فيهِ فَسُنَّة
لِلدَّهرِ جاريَةٌ عَلى نُظرائِهِ

10. They will not rejoice in it - how many gloaters
Over his demise, though perhaps he still draws breath

١٠. لا يَفرَحونَ بِها فَكَم مِن شامِتٍ
بِحِمامِهِ وَلَعَلَّهُ في دائِهِ

11. O owner of the strange grave, and below it
Danger that makes distance in its groaning

١١. يا صاحِبَ الجَدَثِ الغَريبِ وَدُونَهُ
خَطَرٌ يُعَدُّ مَسافَةً في نائِهِ

12. The clouds remembered over your tomb a
Tie by which tears flow from their streams

١٢. ذَكَرَ الغَمامُ عَلى ثَراكَ عَلاقَةً
تَجري بِها العَبَراتُ مِن أَنوائِهِ

13. And the winds breathed upon it, sick
From the heat of the fire of grief or its relief

١٣. وَتَنَفَّسَت فيهِ الرِّياحُ مَريضَةً
مِن حَرِّ نارِ الحُزنِ أَو برحائِهِ

14. I surely neglected you out of fear, and maybe
A friend neglects while you are still in his bosom

١٤. فَلَقَد جَفَوتُكَ رَهبَةً وَلَرُبَّما
هَجَرَ الصَّديقُ وَأَنتَ في أَحشائِهِ
