- أبى الله إلا أن يرى يدك العلياGod willed to see your hand uppermost,
- أجد الكلام إذا نطقت فإنماPerfect your speech when you speak, for it is only
- أخفضا نوت فينا النوى ولعلهاDid separation intend ease for us? Perhaps
- أخلق الدهر بقاء واستجدWear out time with your endurance, and gain anew
- أخو ظمأ يمص حشاه سبعA thirst-stricken man—seven suck at his innards,
- إذا سقيت أرض فقد بشرت أرضWhen one land is watered, another receives glad tidings.
- إذا شذت عن العرب المعانيIf meanings elude the Arabs,
- إذا شئت كان النجم عندك شاهديIf you wish, the star will be my witness before you
- أرحلي محمول على العتق النجبIs it my saddle, borne on purebred, noble camels,
- إزرع المعروف حزنا وسهلاSow kindness on rugged ground and level,
- استقبل العز مرفوعا به علمكWelcome glory, with your banner raised by it.
- اسعد كما سعدت بك الأيامBe happy, as the days have been happy through you,
- أصخ نحوي لدعوة مستقلLend your ear to me, to the call of a lowly man,
- أضاء لها فجر النهى فنهاهاThe dawn of abstinence shone for her, so it deterred her
- أعاره النرجس من لونهThe narcissus lent it some of its hue,
- أعيا شفاء الهم إن لم تشفهThe solace of cares defies healing, if you cannot heal them,
- أفي مثلها تنبو أياديك عن مثليAt such a time, do your favors turn away from one like me,
- إقبال جدك للإسلام إقبالThe rise of your fortune is a rise for Islam,
- اقبل ثناء وشكراAccept praise and thanks,
- أقدمت دون معالم الإسلامYou advanced to defend the landmarks of Islam;
- ألا هكذا فليسم للمجد من سماBehold, let whoever rises rise thus to glory,
- الآن رد عنان الملك في يدهNow the reins of sovereignty have been restored to his hand,
- السيف أبهى للعلاThe sword is more splendid for lofty glory,
- الشمس شاهدة وإن تك واحدهThe sun is a witness, though she is only one;
- الله جارك ظاعنا ومقيماGod is your protector, settled and transient
- النصر حزبك في الضلالة فاحتكمVictory is your ally against misguidance; pass judgment.
- إلى أي ذكر غير ذكرك أرتاحIn what remembrance but yours can I find solace?
- إلى شجا لاعج في القلب مضطرمTo a burning anguish in my heart
- إليك سبقت أقدار الحمامToward you I outstripped the decrees of death,
- إليك منك فرار الخائف الوجلTo you the frightened fugitive flees
- اليوم أبهجت المنى إبهاجهاToday, hopes have brought their fullest joy,
- اليوم أنكص إبليس على عقبهToday Iblis recoiled upon his heel,
- اليوم نادتك السيادة هيت لكToday lordship called to you: "Come!"
- إن تفخر الدنيا فأنت فخارهاIf the world boasts, you are its pride.
- إن روضا لم تسقه منذ عامIndeed, a garden you have left unwatered for a year
- إن كان وجه الربيع مبتسماIf spring’s face is smiling,
- إن يجر زاكي دم للحمد تتلفهIf pure blood that you expend for praise should flow,
- أنضيت خيلي في الهوى وركابيI wore out my horses and riding camels in love,
- أنورك أم أوقدت بالليل ناركIs that your light, or have you kindled your fire by night
- أهل بالبين فانهلت مدامعهHe cried out at separation, and his tears poured forth.
- أهلا بمن قهر الملوك ومرحباWelcome to him who subdued the kings, and welcome!
- أهلا بمن نصر الإله وأيداWelcome to him whom God has aided and upheld,
- أهلي قد أنى لك أن تهليRaise your cry; the time has come for you to raise it
- أهنيك يا عيد الرغائب عيداI congratulate you, O feast of hoped-for blessings, on a feast
- أهنيكما ما يهنئ الدين منكماI congratulate you both on what in you gladdens the faith:
- أوجفت خيلي في الهوى وركابيI drove my horses and riding camels swiftly in love,
- أي شراع لأي بحرWhat a sail for what a sea!
- أياديك ردت يدي في يديكاYour favors have put my hand back in your hands,
- بحكم العدل من قاضي السماءBy justice's decree from the Judge of heaven,
- بدا لك نجم السعد واطلع النجحThe star of good fortune has appeared to you, and success has risen into view;
- بسعدك لا بسعد أو سعادThrough your good fortune—not through Saʿd or Suʿad—
- بشر الخيل يوم كر الطرادGive the horses glad tidings on the day of the charge in pursuit,
- بشراك أيتها الدنيا وبشراناGood tidings to you, O world, and good tidings to us!
- بشير يوم بملك دهرA day's glad herald of an age-long reign,
- بفتح الفتوح وسعد السعودWith the opening of victories and the joy of triumphs,
- بقاء الخلائق رهن الفناءThe life of all creatures is pledged to extinction.
- بلغت عبدك الخطوب مداهاCalamities have brought your servant to their utmost limit,
- تبلج عن إشراق غرتك الصبحDawn broke from the radiance of your brow.
- تتبين شمل الدين أنك ناظمهFaith's ranks recognize that you knit them together,
- تخيرت فاستمسكت بالعروة الوثقىYou chose, then held fast to the firmest handhold;
- تركت قلبي بغير صبرYou have left my heart without patience
- تسليت حتى أنسي الهائم الهماYou give solace until the anxious forgets anxiety,
- تسمع لدعوة ناء غريبListen to the plea of one far away, a stranger,
- تصدت لوشك البين من جفوة الصدShe came forth from rejection's coldness as parting drew near,
- تناضل عنك أقدار السماءHeaven's decrees fight on your behalf,
- ثم أَحييت فجرهم يا ابن يحيىThen you revived their dawn, O son of Yahya,
- ثم أقدمتهن شعث النواصيThen you urged them forward, their forelocks disheveled,
- ثنائي عليك ونعماك فيناMy praise of you and your favors among us
- جاءتك خاضعة أعناقها الأممThe nations have come to you with their necks bowed,
- جهادك حكم الله من ذا يردهYour holy warfare is God's decree—who can repel it?
- جهز لنا في الأرض غزوة محتسبPrepare for us on earth a campaign for God's reward.
- حاشا لنار هواك أن تطفاNever shall the fire of love for you be quenched,
- حسبي رضاك من الدهر الذي عتباI am content with Your pleasure despite the blames of time,
- خلا الدهر من خطب يضيق له ذرعيMy time lacked troubles that strained my endurance,
- دأبك الهجر ودابيYour habit is estrangement, and mine
- دعي عزمات المستضام تسيرLet the resolves of the wronged man travel,
- دعيت فأصغ لداعي الطربYou have been invited; so heed joy's caller.
- دواليك من دهر يواليك بالنجحOne turn after another comes to you from an age that favors you with success;
- رب ظبي خنث ألحاظهMany a gazelle with languid glances,
- زمان جديد وصنع جديدA new age, and fresh beneficence;
- سأمنع قلبي أن يحن إليكI will prevent my heart from yearning for you,
- سامي التليل كأن عقد عذارهHigh-necked, as though the knot of his cheekstrap
- سر سار صنع الله حيث تسيرGo—may God's favor go wherever you go,
- سعي شفى بالمنى قبل انتها أمدهAn endeavor that healed with wishes fulfilled before its term was done,
- سلام على الأيام تسليم إقبالPeace upon the days—a greeting of good fortune,
- سلام على البدر الذي خلف الشمساPeace be upon the full moon that succeeded the sun,
- سلام على مستودع الروح والنفسPeace upon the refuge of spirit and soul,
- سلام وهنيت فيك السلامهPeace! I am congratulated on your safety,
- سماء العلا منكم وأنت لها بدرThe heaven of glory comes from you, and you are its full moon;
- شكرا لمن أعطاك ما أعطاكاThanks to the One who gave you what He gave you:
- شكلان من راح وروضة نرجسTwo counterparts—wine and a garden of narcissus—
- شهدت لك الأبطال يوم كفاحهاChampions bore witness for you on the day of their combat,
- شهدت لك الأعياد أنك عيدهاThe festivals testified for you that you are their festival.
- شوق شديد ووصل من حبيبينIntense longing, and union with two beloveds.
- شيما سنا البارق المنهل فالتمحاWatch, you two, the gleam of the rain-pouring lightning, and discern
- ضحك الزمان لنا فهاك وهاتهTime has smiled on us—so take it and give it here.
- طاعت لك الأحرار باستعبادهاThe freeborn have submitted to you in bondage,
- طلعت نجوم السعد من آفاقهاThe stars of good fortune have risen from their horizons;
- طير الفؤاد على لماك تحومThe heart’s birds hover over your dusky lips;
- عادت عليك عوائد الأعوامMay the recurring blessings of the years return to you
- عجبا لغي الحب لاح سبيلهA marvel, that love's waywardness should have so clear a path,
- عزاء وأنت عزاء الجميعTake comfort—you who are the solace of all.
- عزم حداه السعد والإقبالA resolve urged onward by good fortune and success,
- عمرت بطول بقائك الأعمارLives have flourished through your long life,
- عمري لقد أعذر الدمع الذي وكفاBy my life, the tears that streamed have done their utmost,
- عيد ووعد صادق لك بالمنىA feast, and a true promise that your wishes will be fulfilled;
- غدا غير مسعدنا ثم راحاIn the morning it did not gladden us; then it came at evening,
- غرام ولا شكوى وعتب ولا عتبىPassion, but no complaint; reproach, but no amends.
- غريب تحلت بآدابهA stranger whose accomplishments adorned
- فداؤك من لو كان في وسعه الفداTo ransom you, if one had the means,
- فديناك سيفا لم تخنه مضاربهWe would ransom you—a sword whose edges never betrayed it,
- فكأن من حاني السحائب جودهاSo it is as though its bounty came from low-bending clouds,
- قد الخيل والخير بأسا وجوداLead the steeds and goodness with valor and generosity,
- قد خطبنا وقد أجاز الوليWe have proposed, and the guardian has consented,
- قد عادت الشمس في أعلى مطالعهاThe sun has indeed returned to the highest of its rising places,
- قل للخلافة قد بلغت مناكTell the caliphate: You have attained your wishes
- قل للربيع اسحب ملاء سحائبTell spring: Trail the mantles of clouds,
- قل للهوى حكمت فاحكم ليSay to Love: you have been made judge, so rule in my favor.
- كذا تتجلى الشمس بعد كسوفهاThus the sun reveals itself after its eclipse,
- كذا ينتهي البدر المنير إلى الشمسThus the luminous full moon reaches the sun,
- كسيت بدولتك اليالي نوراThe nights were clothed in light by your reign,
- كفي شئونك ساعة فتأمليStill your tears a moment, and contemplate
- كل الكواكب ما طلعت سعودAll the stars have risen, you brought good fortune,
- كم أستطيل تضللي وتلدديHow long my wandering and wavering seem to me,
- لتهنئ سلامتك المسلميناMay your well-being bring joy to the Muslims,
- لعل سنا البرق الذي أنا شائمEnglish translation unavailable
- لعلك يا شمس عند الأصيلPerhaps, O sun, at eventide,
- لك البشرى ودمت قرير عينGlad tidings to you; may your eyes remain delighted

- ما أطبق الهم إلا ريثما انفرجاGrief closed in only briefly before it lifted,
- ما أوضح العذر لي لو أنهم عذرواHow clear my excuse would be, if only they excused me!
- ما كفر نعماك من شأني فيثنينيIt is not my way to deny your bounty and so turn away
- محلك بالدنيا وبالدين آهلYour abode flourishes with worldly life and faith:
- مكارمك اغتباقي واصطباحيYour noble deeds are my evening draught and my morning draught,
- من سبي سيبك مما أنبتت نعمكI am of the captives of your bounty, of all your favors brought to bloom,
- منكم إليكم مساعي المجد تنصرفFrom you to you, the strivings of glory turn.
- منن بأيسر شكرها أعييتنيFavors—you have left me unable to offer even their simplest thanks.
- نجوم الصبا أين تلك النجومO stars of youth, where are those stars?
- نداك حبيب لا يشط مزارهYour generosity is a beloved whose dwelling is never far away.
- نعم يبشر بدؤها بتمامBlessings whose beginning heralds their completion:
- نور الوفاء بأرضنا لك ساطعThe light of loyalty shines for you in our land.
- هربنا إليكم فآويتموناWe fled to you, and you sheltered us.
- هل أنت مدرك آمالي فمحييهاWill you fulfill my hopes and thus revive them,
- هل تثنين غروب دمع ساكبWill streams of pouring tears turn back
- هل يجهل السمت من يستوضح الطرقاDoes one who seeks clarity about the roads not know the direction?
- هلال بنور السعد والحق مقمرA crescent, radiant with the light of good fortune and truth,
- هنيئا لنا ولأقصى العبادJoy to us and to the farthest of God's servants:
- هنيئا لهذا الدهر روح وريحانJoy to this age: repose and sweet fragrance,
- هو البدر في فلك المجد داراHe is the full moon, circling in the sphere of glory.

- وأي زنادي فتنة أوريا لهاAnd what a pair of fire-strikers of strife, which kindled for it
- وطن فؤادك إن كان الرحيل غداSteel your heart if departure is tomorrow;
- وعدا على الله حقا نصر من نصرهA promise truly binding upon God: victory for whoever aids Him,
- وفي سر من را من محلي مقاصرAnd at my dwelling in Surra Man Ra are secluded chambers,
- وفي غيابات أطباق الخطوب شجAnd in the dark depths of layered calamities, one stricken
- وفيهن أضحيت يوم الأضاحيAmong them you greeted the morning of the Feast of Sacrifice,
- ولا في سرور العيد نحن مهنوهNor amid the joy of Eid do we congratulate him,
- ومحق الشهر كمال البدرAnd the month effaced the perfection of the full moon,
- ونيلوفر قمن بالذبولAnd a water lily, prone to withering,
- ويوم كسوتها رهج المصلىAnd on the day you clothed them in the dust of the prayer ground,
- يا حبذا خجل التفاح في طبقAh, how lovely the apples' blush upon a platter,
- يا صفوة الأجفان من عبراتهاO purest of the eyelids' tears,
- يا عاكفين على المدام تنبهواO you devoted to wine, awaken!
