    وعُلاً تَضَعْضَعُ دونَها الآجالُ

    A resolve urged onward by good fortune and success,

    and heights of glory before which death falters;

    بالنَّصْرِ عائِدَةً وَلَيْسَ تَزَالُ

    and God's favors, which have ever, for you,

    returned with victory and never cease;

    بالفتحِ فِي جَنَباتِها اسْتِهْلالُ

    and battalions—on the day they march, good fortune

    raises a cry of conquest along their flanks;

    and a kingdom's bondsmen and a dynasty's followers,

    who know for certain that life is battle.

    Steadfast men: when they draw their swords, it becomes clear

    to their enemies that the lions are men.

    At ease with the noonday heat, they have no

    shade but the flats of Mashrafi swords.

    They keep chanting 'O Mansur!'—it is their battle cry:

    chants whose truth good omens have grown accustomed to.

    بِسِوى الجماجِمِ والنحورِ صِقالُ

    And keen swords that dispelled the darkness, with no

    polish but skulls and throats;

    of the same origin as you, and bequeathed

    by your forefathers, the Dhu-lords and qayl princes:

    للشمسِ فِي ظُلَمِ العَجاجِ خَيالُ

    each keen-edged blade as though it were

    a phantom of the sun in the gloom of battle-dust;

    لَمْ يعتَلِلْ بأَدائِهِنَّ مِطالُ

    and spears that, when they demand the foes' souls,

    allow no evasive delay in payment;

    long and slender: when you level them, they cut short

    the lives of their quarry, though they are long.

    Your noble deeds outshone the morning light; falling short

    of their full measure were all likenesses and comparisons.

    My soul be your ransom, while souls are swept aloft

    by the fire of battle, and mountains crash together,

    and bright swords flash and spearheads blaze,

    and horses prance in the crush of battle,

    and your face ranges through the stations of death,

    where thoughts themselves have no room to range.

    And many a precious prize you plunged yourself into peril to win—

    indeed, precious things are won at the cost of lives.
