Heaven's decrees fight on your behalf,

and destiny's hand strikes in place of your two hands.

And an endeavor that never turns aside to rest,

and a course that never comes to an end.

So your spears have never fallen short of an enemy,

even if the extent of his remoteness proved daunting.

When you level them in the wake of one astray,

his paths of escape have already narrowed,

even if two thousand eagles flew away with him,

seeking to pierce the air with his very body.

And where can he flee from death's pursuit,

and where can he slip out from beneath the sky?

So may a herald gladden faith and the world

with news of García, champion of foes and enmity,

through a deed that long defied all hopes,

and before which expectation's reach fell short,

sweeter to the ears than life,

and more healing to souls than a cure.

What a conquest for a conqueror, and glad tidings

for one awaiting them; what a sight for a beholder!

A captive unequaled in the price of release,

and a prisoner unmatched in ransom.

He is the incurable disease you have cured,

so faith has no incurable disease.

Your lucky stars have indeed ensnared in him a star,

unassailable in the sky, hard to ascend to,

and greater in misguidance than a cross,

and loftier among battalions than a banner.

He protected the sects of error, and they deemed him worthy

to command their servitude and allegiance.

A commander of battalions and mature steeds,

a refuge for subjects and shepherds,

vying with his sword in daring and might,

and his experience reinforced by cunning.

Yet can prudence and daring ever,

when your lucky stars appear, be of any use?

He ventured a charge against God's armies,

once they had declared hostilities against him on equal terms.

    Victory never departs from them,

nor is the conquest they bring ever hidden.

So, charging toward them, he grappled with the ghoul of death,

and was made to swallow battle's bitterness before them.

And they withdrew, leaving him sprawled and fallen,

his standing preserved, his lingering life protected.

And an army delivered him to Islam,

its mass choking the vastness of open space.

If the tips of the lofty spears forsook him,

the wailing of lamentation indeed consoled him,

with every chanter of lament who saddens

his mourners by repeating the cry.

Proclaim the death-news to all the kings of the Romans,

the crowned ones: proclaim García's death!

And what have the Romans and the Franks from him,

now that he has perished, save wretched consolation?

So the realm of unbelief has no protector,

and idolatry's blood-claim has no equal requital.

Your swords have indeed pleased, through him, a lord

noble in his pledge, praiseworthy in his exploits.

For they never gave aid in your absence except

when noble fidelity had lent aid through them.

Nor did they capture kings for you except

    once you had clothed them in the mark of splendor;

nor did they snatch souls for you except

once you had slaked their thirst with blood.

And for this you have rendered thanks to God,

    sustaining it with sincere prayer.

And you embraced His servants with pardon and bounty,

knowing that He is the Lord of recompense.

So He granted ever more of what you wished,

    and multiplied His generous gifts.

And He sent García's routed remnants onward in haste,

death driving them as a camel-driver's song drives his herd.

So I ask Him who created them for death

by your sword, to favor you with lasting life,

your eyes content, your wishes granted in abundance,

fortunate in lot, happy in your abode,

for a reign untroubled by time's reversals,

and good fortune that never comes to an end.
