كَعَوَالي مُنذِرٍ يَومَ النِّزالِ
Many a gazelle with languid glances,
Many a soft and weakling man, his glances
Like Mundhir's spearheads on the day of battle,
Are like banners of warning on the day of strife.

فأخذت النَّجمَ من كَفِّ الهِلالِ
Filled the cup to the brim and greeted me with it;
He passed the wine-cup round and it intoxicated me,
So I took the star from the crescent's palm.
So I seized the bright star from the hand of the crescent moon.
فكأنِّيand it is as though I واجِدٌexperiencing فِيin شُربِهاdrinking it
فكأنِّي واجِدٌ فِي شُربِها

لَذَّةَ المنصُورِ فِي بَذلِ النَّوالِ
And it was as though, in drinking it, I felt
When I drink it seems I feel the pleasure
Al-Mansur's delight in bestowing bounty.
Al-Mansur knew in bestowing gifts and largesse.
