    فاقْدَمْ بخيرِ تحية وسَلامِ

    You advanced to defend the landmarks of Islam;

    so come with the finest greeting and peace,

    girt with the sword of valor, and above it

    the adornment of splendor and the robe of veneration.

    قَلقاً إليكَ مُبارَكُ الإكرامِ

    The eyes of humankind rise to behold you;

    blessed honor is restless for you.

    Winning the finest portion from a king who gained

    the richest shares from your sincere endeavor.

    So he rewarded you with a generous welcome, repaying what

    you had rendered him in genuine valor,

    طَيْشَ العقولِ وزَلَّةَ الأقدامِ

    through stands you made in battle that inflicted on foes

    bewilderment of mind and stumbling of feet;

    لأرَتْكَ فِي جَوِّ السماءِ السَّامي

    and virtues that, but for your closeness to generosity,

    would have shown you in the lofty reaches of heaven;

    بِشَبا الرِّماحِ وألسُنِ الأقلامِ

    ranks whose praise and radiance you raised

    with spearpoints and the tongues of pens;

    and sword-belts—within what you made them bear lie

    the abasement of error and the might of Islam.

    God be praised for your keen blade from him! Whenever

    discord rises, it draws near with a decisive stroke.

    فَهِيَ الأهِلَّةُ وَهْوَ بَدْرُ تَمامِ

    The swords of error recoiled from it and bent;

    so they are crescents, and it is the perfect full moon.

    Wishes were fulfilled for it and through it, and lifted

    from them was the night of injustice and darkness.

    It travels by night toward the enemies along the paths of darkness,

    until it takes its noon rest where heads repose.

    So through it you entered the lands lawfully yours, and

    all forbidden things became inviolable to the misguided.

    And you ruled by manifest truth for those entitled to it,

    with justice in decrees and judgments.

    بخوافِقِ الرّايات والأعلامِ

    A land in whose landmarks you made truth shine,

    with fluttering banners and standards;

    you rained thunderbolts from a flashing cloud upon its heights,

    and drenched it with abundant favors,

    watering it with the rain of life, and lifting

    from it the torment of debt and forced submission.

    You left it a place of banishment for treachery,

    and established it as a dwelling-place for security.

    And you strung the pearls of its necklaces and covenants

    on the thread of this kingdom—what splendid order!

    And you enforced God's prescribed penalty against whoever wronged it,

    striking with the edge of the keen, unbending sword:

    a rebel who, by his rebellion and breach of faith, struck

    the very life he shields and defends.

    And though you sealed him in your prison, overpowering him,

    so morning and evening he lay, at your hands, pledged to death,

    in the womb of a kindly mother who conceived him

    on the day of battle, by a slender spear and a sharp sword,

    yet her womb has labored to deliver him through terror from you,

    terror that mounts and casts him out before full term.

    And indeed you summoned to fight him within her womb

    the pounding of doubts and the terror stirred by fancies.

    And if you allowed him sleep, he would refuse it,

    so as not to see your eyes in dreams.

    And you have filled the open country's expanses around him

    with lions crouching in the thickets,

    waiting to gather fruits whose time has come

    for their sheaths to open toward you.

    So rejoice in it—a blessing gratefully acknowledged—

    in a reign joined to lasting endurance.

    واسْلَمْ فأنتَ ذخيرةُ الإِسْلامِ

    And take pride, for you are the pride of every glory;

    and stay safe, for you are the treasure of Islam.

    Through striving that left none like you among humankind,

    you thus won the glory of that peerlessness.

    And though you cared for religion and this world, it did not

    make you forget to heed my pleas and my claim to protection.

    عُقْرِ الحِياضِ الوُفْرِ خِزْيَ مقامي

    The day you surveyed my drinking-places and saw, in

    the depths of brimming pools, the humiliation of my position;

    ووَجِسْتَ فِي الأَحشاء حَرَّ أُوامي

    and perceived from my gaze the abasement of my plight,

    and sensed in my entrails the heat of my burning thirst;

    لَحْمِي وظُفْرُ الظُلْمِ مِنِّي دامي

    and saw, in the fangs of the foes' onslaught,

    my flesh, while oppression's claw was stained with my blood;

    and knew that, if you were slow to come to me, I

    could not tighten my belt under all I was enduring.

    So you hastened ahead, fearing my death might come,

    and hurried, fearing my doom might be decreed.

    And you deemed it one of fortune's injustices that I

    should thirst while the sea of generosity surged above me.

    And you were troubled for me, that I should wander with burning thirst,

    sick, while in the drink you offer lies the cure for my sickness.

    And you saw my need through the gaps in my outward composure,

    and understood my words through the silence of modesty.

    So you opened rivers of bounty for my gardens,

    and set up the targets of wishes for my arrows.

    And you opened up my cramped approaches to the water,

    and made room in the pasture for my herds to graze.

    And you refused, for the sake of letters, to let them be assailed by

    the ignorance of the age and the stumbling of days.

    A kinship through learning called forth mercy for me

    from one who fulfills hopes and keeps the bonds of kinship.

    وجزائها فِي مُعْرِقٍ وشَآمِي

    So I shall surely proclaim its praise and commendation,

    and its recompense, among the Iraq-bound and the people of Syria;

    and surely hope for its completion from a benefactor

    who is not content with any favor short of completion.
