يَرُوقُ فيذبلُ عَمَّا قليلِ
And a water lily, prone to withering,
A narcissus blooms then withers after a short while
delights the eye, then withers before long.
It greets the morn with a generous hand

يلاقي الصَّباحَ بيمنى جَوَادٍ
ويُخْفِيand conceals الظَّلاَمَin darkness بيمنىwith the right hand of بخيلِa miser
ويُخْفِي الظَّلاَمَ بيمنى بخيلِ
It greets the morning with a generous man's right hand,
And hides the darkness with a miser's hand
and hides in darkness with a miser's right hand.
It makes the morning breeze accessible

At forenoon it offers whatever fragrance it holds,
Then denies it at sunset
and withholds it at the hour of sunset.

Has it not seen ʿAbd al-Malīk, the king,
Answering hopes and giving generously
who answers hope and bestows abundant gifts?

Were the earth to gain breadth upon breadth,
And time extended in length
and were time to join length to length,
He would continue expanding this and that

بفعلٍ كَريم وذكرٍ جميلِ
he would never cease enriching this and that
With a noble deed and a beautiful mention
with noble deeds and fair renown.
