    يُنادي من غَياباتِ الخُمُولِ

    Lend your ear to me, to the call of a lowly man,

    Who calls from the hidden depths of obscurity;

    ونُهزةِ كلِّ خطبٍ مستطيلِ

    A submissive captive to every sorrow,

    And prey to every overbearing calamity;

    And one his foes can wrong without fear,

    And sleeping soundly through the assaults of vengeance.

    You see me with sound aspirations drawn from you,

    Which recoiled before the darkness of an ailing ordeal.

    Yet many an age has assailed me

    With its treacheries along the open road,

    Clad in two layered coats of mail—oppression and deceit—

    And unsheathing the twin swords of gossip and hearsay,

    And shooting arrows from the bows of rancor.

    They struck the vital parts of noble letters—

    لقد أجْلَيْنَ عن أمَلٍ قَتيلِ

    A father and sons, in defense of inviolable honor;

    Indeed, the arrows withdrew, leaving hope slain.

    So it was like a burning eyelid

    That shed blood upon a smooth cheek.

    And one whose innards burned with grievous illness

    Breathed forth from it a polished sword.

    وتلكَ وَسائلي دَرَجُ السُّيولِ

    So those are my landmarks: the banner of calamities;

    And those are my means: the stairways of torrents;

    And those are my ranks of distinction:

    Doves sobbing for Hadil.

    Perhaps your favor, O Mansur, one day

    Will alight in my courtyard before long,

    And, from you, strike the ears of glory

    On our behalf, at the stumble of a servant seeking pardon.

    To you I have unveiled virgin meanings,

    As apologies, with the radiance of acceptance,

    Traveling by night through darkness without stars,

    Guiding through the desert without a guide.
