Today Iblis recoiled upon his heel,

with the bond of the misguided released from his own.

And the unbelievers' factions became certain, however far away,

in East and West, that idolatry sprang from his lies,

when you advanced upon it at Shantiyāqa,

with gleaming swords, like the full moon traveling by night amid its meteors' glow.

And the host of the faith and Islam wheeled

around you like the celestial sphere revolving on its axis,

until you severed the bonds of error's faith from

a place of firm foundations, its precinct guarded and thickly wooded.

Time had never frightened a grazing creature there,

nor had an ear listened for its calamities.

One of the things worshippers of the false deity chose and believed in,

and unbelief had built through thousands of its ages,

the pillar of their idolatry, its pinnacles soaring,

with Romans, Abyssinians, and Franks among its guy-ropes.

Groups of unbelievers made pilgrimage to it, streaming

like the sky darkened where its gray clouds meet.

A repository in the earth's ravines, far away,

with lofty mountains and the sea's depths among its veils,

from every dust-covered man whom travel had bitten,

and every wan-faced man, distressed by long night journeys,

and every giver offering to the pillars of its church

what was dearest of himself and of his wealth within it.

Indeed, many a time kings had bared their feet

within it, and fallen upon their chins in awe of it.

You marched upon it with truth's soldiers, and they returned

with victory's radiant brow, having reversed its fortunes.

And you inflicted a raging blaze of fire upon it; no soul remained

of unbelief but became part of its firewood.

O, the beauty of guidance's sight arising from its ugly spectacle,

and the coolness of the livers of God's party from its flames!

And Birmund sought refuge from it in flight; how often

before this had he sought refuge in the idols of his crosses!

Settling upon the mount of retreat from you—yet could it

carry him beyond the course of his inevitable ruin?

Hiding from you in the darkness of night; and if

daybreak came upon him, he hid in the gloom of his anguish.

Today, indeed, it has proved true of him—a heart aflame...

He flushes no birds for omens on plain or mountain

but ill-omened ones that blind the eye of whoever approaches him.

And where is his path of escape from you, when

you have drawn the sword of guidance and victory in pursuit of him?

And Iliya, which had been the oath of one

zealous in idolatry, fearing sin and watching for it—

you raised from it the glow of a fire that illuminated for them

whatever of his doubts Satan had lodged within it.

A resolve from you kindles it; if a flame should flag

within it, it would rekindle it in God's cause out of its wrath.

So God will reward you, O Mansur: you called upon Him

with resolute striving for the faith's victory, seeking reward for it,

and for battalions of Islam which you led

toward God's pleasure, until they became among His books,

and for a believer who spends his lifeblood for God,

whom you brought from his toil to the goal of the enviably fortunate,

and for a sword of guidance whose face you never burnished

without pouring the blood of idolatry into its grooves.

And let a day of glory boast of you, O Mansur—

you have left the days to come boasting of it.
