Favors—you have left me unable to offer even their simplest thanks.

So when shall I give due thanks for what you bestowed on me?

You gave me time's treasure, and indeed

you gave me life's honor and its glory.

At your service, grateful for a blessing! You are the one

who answered me when I called for its succor.

So you slew a grief whose swords' edge I had tasted

with swords of bounty by which you kept me alive.

And with your generous hand you inscribed my enrollment,

and the glory is mine, from you, for you named me.

Enough for me: when you mentioned me, you honored me.

And that suffices: when you spoke of me, you overwhelmed me.

Your remembrance of me is the greatest blessing you have clothed me in,

and your favor is the highest office you have appointed me to.

So may kings be your ransom: on the day you heard me

anguished in sorrow's captivity, you ransomed me.

And may you be given victory's rain to drink: when you saw me

thirsty, with my heart aflame, you gave me drink.

May God's shade shelter you in His dominion

and His bliss, in recompense for the shelter you gave me.

And may the Merciful preserve for you what He entrusted to your care

of His religion, as a reward for the care you showed me.

And may He sate your swords upon your foes; there had assailed me

a grief whose sickness was killing me, and you healed me.

And may all you are charged with be taken care of for you: on the day there befell me

a grief that knelt upon my breast, you relieved me of it.

So it is as though you knew for certain what was yours within my heart

of obedience and sincere devotion, and so rewarded me.

And you knew I was foremost in faithfulness to you,

so you outstripped me with the favors you granted me in full.

So if my hopes favored me with nearness to you,

I would not say, after attaining them, 'Oh, if only I...'

so that I might kiss, whenever I meet it,

a hand through whose generous giving you brought me to life.
