Nor amid the joy of Eid do we congratulate him,

nor upon the royal throne do we greet him.

Ah, my grief for him, whom armored warriors feared!

And my grief for him, whom kings obeyed!

And my grief for him, whom battle roused to action!

And my grief for him, whom the battalions followed!

And my grief for him, whom guests visited!

And my grief for him, toward whom the mounts made their way!

And my grief for him, toward whom hopes turned!

And my grief for him, in whom the people placed their hopes!

And my grief for him, with copies of the Qur'an around him,

as he wrote God's Book in them and recited it.

And my grief for him, as he attended every mosque,

whose callers to prayer and worshippers were his followers.

The anguish of a heart whose burning pain is not soothed

by rushing tears, driven onward by the searing heat of sorrow.

And to the All-Merciful I lament the sorrow of losing

one against whom no suppliant ever spent the night complaining to God.

And before Him I pray for the attainment of solace and rest,

for one who never ceased to call others to Him and invoke Him.

And though his loss and the calamity of his death weigh heavily on us,

to test us in patience without him, and to test him,

yet Islam has indeed been compensated for the loss of his life

    with a crescent in the sky: those who hail it do not go astray;

    فَسَقُّوهُ إِخلاصَ الصدورِ ورَوُّوهُ

    and with a sea that quenched your thirst with generosity and blessings;

    so give it the sincerity of your hearts to drink, and quench its thirst;

    فصُوغُوا لَهُ حُرَّ الوفاءِ فَحَلُّوهُ

    and with a sword that bestowed its flat side and keenness upon you;

so fashion pure loyalty for it, then adorn it.

For Time, whose calamity has struck, has decreed

that it will dispel that calamity only through al-Muzaffar.

And one whose striving never strays from leadership

is not passed over by leadership's glad tidings,

with guidance from al-Mansur that he does not neglect,

following the course of his striving, in which he spares no effort.

But for you, O Yahya, his loss would have shattered

the peaks of a mountain your illustrious lords had built.

And but for you, O Yahya, with his death there would have died

men who supported him with noble hearts.

Nor would they have held their own lives dearer than his,

once he had tasted death, until they too had tasted it.

And souls were bidden farewell at his farewell,

and those who lost him lost the path of patience in his absence.

And the world overturned hearts and souls,

so life is not loved, nor death hated.

So may Time never scatter us while you gather us together,

nor any wound torment us while your right hand heals it.

Nor may polytheism be shielded from what it fears from you,

nor may Islam lack what it hopes for from you.
