بَلَّغَتْbrought to the limit عَبدَكَyour servant الخطوبُcalamities مداهاtheir utmost extent
يومَon the day of تبليغِكَyour enabling to attain النُّفوسَsouls مُناهاtheir wishes
Calamities have brought your servant to their utmost limit,
My Lord, worries have reached their limit for Your servant,
on the day you fulfill the wishes of souls.
On the day You summon souls to their fate.
وتَناهىand reached its utmost جَهدُthe hardship الحَياةِof life بمَنْfor one who لَمْdid not
يَسعَstrive فيماfor what رَضِيتَyou approved إِلَّاexcept that تَناهىwent to the utmost
And life's hardship has reached its utmost for one who never
And life's efforts end for one who hasn't
strove for what you approved without going to the utmost.
Aspired beyond what You deemed enough.
وعَجيبٌand it is strange أَنْthat يُفنِيَshould destroy الظِّمءُthirst نَفساًa soul
أَبْحُرُthe seas الأَرضِof the earth فِيin يَدَيْthe two hands of مَوْلاهاits master
And strange it is that thirst should destroy a soul
Strange that thirst would kill one
whose master holds the earth's seas in his two hands.
When the earth's seas are under his control.
مَلِكٌa king نافَسَتْit vied بأدنىfor the slightest of رِضَاهُhis favor

A king for whose slightest favor it vied,
A king whose smallest pleasure
promising him its fullest contentment as gain.
Promised him ample riches and pleasures galore,
بَذَلَتْit offered كُلَّall طارِفٍnewly acquired wealth وتليدٍand inherited wealth
لَوْif شَفاهاhe cured it منof لَيتِهاits 'if only' وعساهاand its 'perhaps'
It offered all newly acquired and inherited wealth,
Who spent lavishly, holding nothing back,
if he would cure it of its 'if only' and its 'perhaps'.
If it cured his yearning - if only for a moment.
ولقدand indeed شافَهَتْit confronted سيوفَthe swords عدَاهُof his foes
لَوْif كفاهاhe shielded it بِهَاwith them شمَلتَyou encompassed (wording uncertain) عِدَاهاits foes
And indeed it has faced the swords of his foes,
And he was healed by the swords of his enemies,
if he shielded it with them, you would encompass its foes [wording unclear].
Had You willed to protect him from their evils.
إِنْif تَلاقَيْتَهاyou met it فأَنْفسُthen the most precious نَفْسٍsoul
لَكَfor you أَسْنىthe most splendid of حُلِيِّهاits jewels وحُلاهاand its adornments
If you meet it, it is a most precious soul;
If You call him to You, the noblest soul
its most splendid jewels and adornments are yours.
Is Your humblest, most devoted slave.
أَوْor else فأَدْنىthen the nearest of مواعِدِthe appointed times المَوْتِof death منهاto it
إِنْif تُضِعْهاyou neglect it عَشِيَّةًan evening أَوْor ضُحاهاits forenoon
Or else death's nearest appointed hour awaits it,
Or if the place of death is nearer to him,
if you neglect it for an evening or that day's forenoon.
Whether You take him at dusk or dawn.
