Thus the sun reveals itself after its eclipse,

And battle's scabbards emerge from its swords,

And the return of its spring grows lush with trees,

And its autumn's recurrence ripens with fruits.

And we know that God has preserved for His earth

Its shepherd's care and its tender guardian's affection.

His mercy has preserved its merciful one's life,

And His compassion has bestowed its compassionate one's soul,

In tenderness toward its afflicted and its stranger,

And kindness toward its hard-pressed and its weak.

How strange the days! They have broken a pledge

To a king who fulfills their covenant whenever they demand it.

And how did the nights make us fear for the one

Who shields us from their assailant's assault and their terrorizer's dread?

And how did calamity's onslaught aim at a heart

Through which Islam was safe from their cruel vicissitudes?

And if a stealthy night-visitor deceived it through generosity,

Spelling out a complaint to it in letters not its own,

Then crept toward it among its many petitioners,

And came to it at evening in the guise of its guests,

An Indian sword's back does not find afflictions strange,

    Accustomed to the clash of cleaving blades, well knowing them;

Nor a hand's palm, whose stars never fail,

    Rising laden with streaming, pouring rains;

A kissing-place for the mouths of kings, its shade

    A sky above its lowly and its noble;

Nor a foot that, never weary through the ages, ascends

The summits of every towering height, however hard to climb.

Were the raging wind to attempt to match its course,

It would seek refuge in the desert's far reaches from its storms.

And if wasting sickness has touched your body, Mansur,

The slenderest Yemeni blade has the keenest edge:

A striking blade worn thin by heads and necks,

Dazzling with its polished, burnished edge,

Fierce against champions, with great gifts bestowed

By a hand never harsh toward Islam.

And though your illness made even its proud one shed tears,

Your good tidings have dried its grieving one's eye.

And though some freshness withered from kingship's mighty tree,

Its ripe clusters have not left the world bereft.

Indeed, from its bed it spread its shade over us,

And its radiant light from behind its curtains.

And though sovereignty cast off her ornaments,

And anxiety gave her the winding of her veil instead,

How swiftly a blessing returned from God,

Through which she shone in her crown and earrings!

Thus she restored to Islam the light of its people's eyes,

And bestowed on the enemies the abasement of their noses,

Through the renewed charge of horses' forelocks toward their dwellings,

Raising hopes high in their swift pace and gallop.

Their guide's light kindles the swords of India,

And counting their thousands baffles Indian reckoning.

The wind of victory raises clouds from them,

Pouring upon the enemies the rain of their deaths.

The thunder of victory rattles from their flanks,

And the lightning of conquest flashes between their ranks.

And if you turned away from them, Mansur, there is a precedent

In the Chosen One's troops being turned back from Thaqif,

And sacrificial camels being barred short of their place of sacrifice,

When their long confinement had eaten away their hair.

And if a groan from you turned back the horses' advance,

Their enemies are hostages to their hosts' renewed charge.

And has your right hand left anything but deposits

That you sealed within their own containers?

Birds returning to the nests within their towers,

And lowland snakes in the depths of their caves,

Awaiting the horses' forelocks, to which are bound

Their masters' pledges and their ally's pact.

Battalions clothing the gravel plains and hills

With horses, battle's old stock and its new,

Keeping the sky's eyes from glimpsing their land,

And turning the sea's noses from sniffing their shore.

They make the moles beneath the soil hear their neighing,

And the desert jinn fall mute, their eerie music stilled.

When eyes are sent roaming among them, bewildered grow

Their gazers, at their marching and their halting.

To gather the Muslims into unity, on a journey

That mixes the cups of its summering with its wintering.

The shade of their dust shields them from summer's fierce heat,

And their swords' fire from the cold that freezes rivers.

May no year of their warfare ever leave Islam bereft,

Nor any day of their absence bring comfort to the enemies.

And may noble deeds and eminence never betray in you

Their faithful friend's sincerity and their companion's affection.

May desires and hopes never turn away from you,

Nor leave you except with their palms filled,

Though, for a while, from your promise's fulfillment there returned

The brows of the stranger's hopes, their wool intact.
