Dawn broke from the radiance of your brow.

And victory and conquest shone forth from your bold advance.

The Muslims' eyes were gladdened by a return

Whose departures were glory and whose arrival was success.

As though the sun's rays came from the light of its guidance,

And the garden breeze's fragrance were a waft of its perfume.

You marched across the earth with God's host, advancing

Toward a trade whose profit was the Gardens of Eden.

You shattered the crowns of error with a blow

Against idolatry, whose wound will never be healed.

And with the water of skulls and throats you quenched

The backs of fine blades, wasted by grievous thirst—

Lightning-flashes that never gleamed for you at a faith-breaker

Only to fail in yielding a pouring shower of blood.

Blades to which your radiance spread, so they shone,

Nor did your pardon or forgiveness pass beyond them.

And blue spears rose against the foes, as though

Sparks had flown to them from Death's fire-stick.

Guides: when they shone for you at a faith-breaker,

Death's sure decree was a flicker of their glances.

And swimming steeds, on land and sea, have never ceased

By your might to swim through a sea of blood.

If ever your onslaught rumbled through them

Toward idolatry, no curb could master their reins.

With the banners of guidance you raised from their chests

Necks whose least exertion was galloping and panting.

Never did they carry calamity to a rebel's home,

However formidable, without its lightest burden being crushing.

Nor did they tread a land of unbelief, though far removed

By perilous wastes, without its people's wounds marking it.

How often, in the heart of error's abode, they terrified

A protected pasture whose herds had never been frightened before them.

With every proud-nosed champion defending you; never faltered

His stout arm or his broad, cutting sword.

They adorned themselves, hanging on the barriers of battle

Noble bosoms filled with loyal devotion to you.

How many they drove from beneath thickets and woodland—

Lions toward you, whose slaughter never grew tiresome.

And a herd of oryx whose cheeks the battle bared,

So wild lote trees and acacias revealed their eyes.

Turning proudly from their peers; yet if you say

To them with spears of al-Khatt, 'A suitor,' they say, 'A husband.'

They left idolatry's chief with, between his eyelid

And the briefest sleep, no covenant or truce.

He shelters in towering, rooted mountains; his lung

Is a mountain ravine for the schemer, or a slope.

He never turned back except to lament old haunts

Where enduring fragrance is yours, and sorrow is his.

And oh, many a precious treasure had no rightly guided keeper:

Generosity preserved it, while stinginess scattered it.

You left before his eyes the palaces of his pride,

And ugliness was the finest adornment you gave their faces.

You made the horses' forelegs trample the egg of his kingdom,

Then they drew away, leaving neither shell nor yolk.

Though their allotted lives shielded some of its defenders,

You are dawn at the ending of their night.

You planted sovereignty firmly in the earth, just as

The Lord of Majesty establishes things there and does not efface them.

Indeed, they toiled to break the covenant they had made with you,

But that striving was thwarted, and their toil recoiled.

Evening and morning they sped in their rebellion

Toward punishments whose evening they reached, but never their morning.

Watering places, where in their depths the swords' pasture

Is not barren, nor the spears' drink scant.

You rode by night against them with horses beneath pitch-darkness

Of night, whose flank hid no hostility toward you.

There met full moon and full moon, and spears

And night's bright stars, and wing and wing.

And two scions of Ya'rub's kings advanced

With their armies, like stars led by al-Nath.

Two lamps of Islam: never did they rise together

Against adversity without fortune and success bringing glad tidings.

This one is a cleaving sword in sovereignty's hand,

Deep-penetrating; the other a spear in Guidance's right hand.

He is the chamberlain, holding among the ranks of eminence

The height where glory, praise, and acclaim reach their utmost.

And the most precious soul among mankind; yet

When he meets the enemies, he is lavish with it.

And his peer in eminence, Nasir al-Dawla, for whom

A lot-arrow wins in every noble deed.

Those are the heights of Pamplona, and the protected land

Of al-Rah—dawn lies blackened throughout its reaches.

And the church of Santa Cruz: above it you kindled

A flame's radiance, an illumination for its blindness.

Easter had been its greatest feast; now it became

An Easter feast for your fire, with no Easter afterward.

To God belong the eyes that saw, through you, its tower,

And a tower of raging flames within its height.

You heaped up crosses in its courtyards

As fuel, whose scorching blast struck the face of Rome.

And there, from its defenders' blood, you made gush

Seas whose spray reached the crown of their kingdom.

In its reaches you leveled every piercing spear,

Each leaving a wound in the sheath of Caesar's heart.

Rising from the horizons of an army seeming

In the wide desert a fragment of night, or a dark wing.

The reach of eyesight loses its way within its flanks,

And wind and sunlight fall short of its limits.

So may you be rewarded for your labors across the lands with blessings

Whose treasures are triumph and whose immediate gift is conquest.

And may you be paid the steadfast ones' reward, multiplied,

From faith and worldly life: favor and gifts be yours.

And may you long enjoy a month of fasting you consecrated

With paired campaigns whose custom was striking and frontal combat.

May the glory of victory and conquest ever head

Toward the mark of what he intends and the mark of what he pursues.
